Activated hydrogen peroxide disinfecting compositions are provided especially for low-foaming applications. A concentrate for dilution by an end-user is provided, which includes a hydrogen peroxide source, a non-surfactant organic sulfonic acid or salt thereof, a non-ionic surfactant, and an optional organic acid. Also provided is a ready-to-use hydrogen peroxide, disinfectant solution including a biocidal amount of hydrogen peroxide, a non-surfactant organic sulfonic acid or salt thereof, a non-ionic surfactant, water as solvent and an optional organic acid. An end-user can disinfect a surface of microorganisms by contacting the surface with the disinfecting composition for an amount of time effective to kill a majority of the microbes located on the surface.

Activated disinfectant hydrogen peroxide compositions

Disinfectant compositions disclosed herein comprise at least one biocidal quaternary ammonium compound, hydrogen peroxide, and optionally inorganic acid and/or organic acid. Particularly, a composition comprising a biocidal quaternary ammonium chloride compound, hydrogen peroxide, and C1 to C8 carboxylic acid, mono-, di- and tricarboxylic acid enhances significantly its antimicrobial activities of either hydrogen peroxide or the quaternary ammonium chloride alone.

Disinfectant composition containing quaternary ammonium compounds

Disclosed is an antimicrobial composition containing an active halogen-containing component having a source of an active halogen and having an elevated pH, which is mixed with an acidic component. An acidic component is added in an amount to the active halogen-containing component to reduce the pH of the antimicrobial composition. When the pH of the active halogen-containing composition is reduced, the resulting composition has been discovered to be effective as a disinfectant and, particularly, as a sporicide. Application methods for applying the composition are also described.

Active halogen antimicrobial composition and method of use

Disclosed are compositions for stabilizing a source of active halogen in aqueous solution. The compositions comprise (i) at least one substituted N-hydrogen compound, such as 5,5-dimethylhydantoin, and (ii) at least one additional nitrogen compound selected from ammonia, ammonium salts, and nitrogen compounds containing no carbon-hydrogen bonds, the molar ratio of (i) and (ii) being in the range of 50:1 to 0.02:1. Active halogen-containing aqueous solutions stabilized by the above compositions are particularly useful for controlling microbial and planktonic growth in aqueous systems such as process liquids in the pulping or papermaking industry. The compositions are also useful in reducing the corrosivity of halogen-containing solutions.

Stabilized active halogen solutions

The present invention provides a method for the removal of biofilm, flocculent bulked sludge or bulked biologically active sludge from an aqueous system. The method involves adding one or more chlorinated hydantoins, such as dichloro- or monochlorodialkylhydantoin, to the aqueous system. Alternatively, the chlorinated hydantoin may be formed in situ by adding a chlorine source and an alkylated hydantoin separately to the aqueous system. The invention is particularly advantageous because of the outstanding photostability of the chlorinated hydantoin solutions even when exposed to sunlight.

Method for removal of biofilm

Free halogen sources (e.g., sodium hypochlorite and chlorine) added as slimicides in high organic component process streams such as pulp and paper processing are rendered more efficacious by the addition of selected N-hydrogen compounds (namely, 5,5-dimethylhydantoin, 5-ethyl-5-methylhydantoin, cyanuric acid, succinimide, urea, 4,4-dimethyl-2-oxazolidinone, and glycouril) to the process stream. The latter compounds may be added to the process stream before or after the slimicide is added or combined with the slimicide and added directly thereto. The direct use of halogenated hydantoins has also been found to provide improved efficacy relative to free halogen sources. In addition, absorbable organic halogen by-products are reduced.

Hydantoin-enhanced halogen efficacy in pulp and paper applications

A continuous method is provided for dissolving a solid oxidizer into an aqueous solution which yields a stream of the aqueous solution having a constant or near constant concentration of solid oxidizer. The method of the present invention includes (a) disposing a bed of solid oxidizer into a container; (b) introducing an aqueous solution below the top surface of the bed; and (c) removing any solution above the top surface of the bed while maintaining a constant or near constant level of aqueous solution above the bed. Preferably, step (c) is performed at about atmospheric pressure. This method can be achieved with a feeder that includes a tank for containing a bed of solid oxidizer and a disperser for introducing the aqueous solution into the tank. A sensor/control unit is provided for sensing a combined bed and aqueous solution volume within the tank and maintaining the combined volume within a predetermined range.

Feeder and method for preparing aqueous solutions containing high concentrations of solid oxidizers

A method of stabilizing hydrogen peroxide in an aqueous solution, such as a circulating water slurry, comprising a peroxide, such as hydrogen peroxide. The aqueous solution may include organic matter. The method comprises adding an aldehyde donor, such as a methylolhydantoin, to the solution (or slurry). The inventors have discovered that aldehyde donors significantly reduce the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide by catalase and other peroxide decomposing enzymes, which are often present in recycled paper. As a result, less hydrogen peroxide needs to be added to a solution to effectively bleach organic matter in the solution. Furthermore, aldehyde donors are safe to handle and cost effective. Another embodiment is a method of bleaching recycled papers in a circulating water slurry comprising organic matter. The method comprises adding hydrogen peroxide and an aldehyde donor to the slurry. Yet another embodiment is a method of inhibiting catalase and/or other peroxide decomposing enzymes in an aqueous solution, such as a circulating water slurry, comprising adding an aldehyde donor to the aqueous solution.

Method of bleaching recycled papers with hydrogen peroxide stabilized with a methylolhydantoin

The inventors have discovered that partially halogenated hydantoins exhibit superior antimicrobial efficacy and decreased performance additive decomposition rates than fully halogenated hydantoins, such as dichlorodimethyl hydantoin (DCDMH). Partially halogenated hydantoins are solutions containing monochlorohydantoin and, optionally, dihalogenated hydantoin or non-halogenated hydantoin. The present invention is a method of reducing slime in a circulating water slurry comprising organic matter and one or more performance additives, such as optical brighteners, while minimizing decomposition of the performance additives. The method comprises adding one or more partially halogenated hydantoins, such as Cl -chlorodimethyl hydantoin, to the slurry. The concentration of partially halogenated hydantoin maintained in the slurry generally ranges from about 0.01 to about 50 ppm (expressed as Cl ). This method is particularly useful for circulating water slurries in paper processing.

Partially halogenated hydantoins in papermaking applications

Polyglycerol esters have been found to be effective antifoam agents in aqueous systems employed in paper processing. Adjunct antifoam agents are not required. Best results are obtained with polyglycerol esters having a degree of glycerine polymerization in the range of 3 to 6 and an esterification range of 15 to 85%.
