The present invention relates to a femoral component for use in connection with knee anthroplasty. The implant includes a support having a contoured inner bone engaging surface, and a shell affixed to the support. The shell has an outer surface spaced so as to provide an articulation surface for engaging the tibia that substantially replicates the shape of a femoral condyle, and an inner surface for receiving an outer surface of the support. The support bone engaging surface is structured to mate with a prepared surface of the distal femur and the support spaces the shell outer surface at a predetermined distance from the prepared surface.

Composite joint implant

A spinal implant for replacing the natural nucleus of the disc made from a polymer such as hydrogel having a radiopaque material located within the polymer. The material may be in the form of a powder dispersed throughout the polymer or may be in he form of a powder dispersed in layers or in other specific locations within the polymer. The radiopaque material is metal such as gold, tungsten, titanium, tantalum or platinum. The metal may also be in the form of a foil or wire located within the hydrogel such as polyurethane, thereby making the implant visible on x-rays. Other polymers besides hydrogel may be used with the radiopaque material being dispersed therein.

Radiovisible hydrogel intervertebral disc nucleus

Instruments and a method for preparing the articular surface of the patella to receive a patellar implant are utilized without everting the patella. A medial or lateral parapatellar incision and an anterior midline incision are made adjacent the patella. The patella is clamped with a patella clamp, a hole is drilled from the anterior surface of the patella. A reamer is inserted through the medial or lateral parapatellar incision and is then attached to the end of a drive shaft that extends outwardly beyond the articular surface of the patella. The posterior facing cutting surface of the reamer device is then placed in contact with the articular surface. The drive shaft is then rotated and moved anteriorly causing the cutting surface of the reamer device to remove a desired amount of patellar cartilage and bone to accommodate a patellar component. The patellar component is secured into place by aligning a central peg protruding from the top surface of the patellar component with the previously drilled hole in the patellar remnant.

Mis patellar preparation

Single use or disposable cutting blocks and methods for utilizing same are disclosed. The blocks are preferably constructed of polymer and/or other suitable low cost and light weight materials. The blocks may be adapted for use with low friction cutting instruments, as well as other such cutting instruments. Several differently sized and configured blocks may be utilized to perform a single surgical procedure. In addition, kits housing one or more such blocks, with or without other instruments are possible.

Single use resection guide

An orthopedic reamer for use in creating and sizing canals in a bone is disclosed. The orthopedic reamer includes a non-polymeric cutting portion having at least one cutting surface thereon and a polymeric body portion covering at least a portion of the cutting portion. The at least one cutting surface is not covered by the polymeric body portion.

Orthopedic reamer

An orthopedic cutting block for use in shaping a bone. The cutting block having at least two components, one of which is made of a polymeric material. The cutting block allowing for precise and accurate cuts to be made, while being inexpensive to manufacture and disposable after a single use.

Orthopedic cutting block

A high strength hydrogel having a constant swelling pressure upon implantation and thereafter is formed by preparing a hydrogel solution and then injecting the solution into a mold and cause to gel. The molded gel is then washed in a saline solution from about one day to twelve weeks, after which the gel is irradiated for sterilization purposes, dehydrated and packaged. The pre-treatment with the use of a physiologic solution results in an implant which exhibits a constant swelling pressure profile after implantation.

Ion treated hydrogel

A wear resistant hydrogel for use as a prosthetic implant, such as for cartilage, is made by forming a solution of polyvinyl alcohol in a solvent of DMSO/water. The solution is placed in a mold and is gelated by cycling the mold in a freeze-thaw cycle at a temperature at or below 4&#xb0; C. for a period of 2 to 24 hours. The hydrogel so formed is washed in a saline solution, including potassium carbonate. The hydrogel is then dehydrated to 20 to 70% water content and thereafter irradiated with Gamma radiation. The surface of the hydrogel is then cross-linked using a boric acid solution preferably between 2.5 and 5% for about 1 minute. The hydrogel is then rinsed and sterilized.
