An optical disc having machine-readable, information-encoding features is provided with a barrier layer secured to the disc. This barrier layer is configured to prevent machine-reading of the features. A reading-inhibit agent, included in the disc and activated by removal of the barrier layer, is operative, once activated, to alter the disc to inhibit reading of the disc. Alternately, the barrier layer can be eliminated, and the reading-inhibit agent can be activated by initial reading of the disc, as for example by exposure to optical radiation associated with reading of the disc, or rotation of the disc.

Machine-readable optical disc with reading-inhibit agent

An optical disc having machine-readable, information-encoding features is provided with a barrier layer secured to the disc. This barrier layer is configured to prevent machine-reading of the features. A reading-inhibit agent, included in the disc and activated by removal of the barrier layer, is operative, once activated, to alter the disc to inhibit reading of the disc, after some period of time. Alternately, the barrier layer can be eliminated, and the reading-inhibit agent can be activated by initial reading of the disc, as for example by exposure to optical radiation associated with reading of the disc, or rotation of the disc.

A telephone privacy device includes first and second connectors that are mateable with a telephone handset and a telephone base, respectively. The handset includes a microphone, and the device includes a variable amplifier that allows the user to amplify the microphone signal to a desired level prior to sending it on to the base. A signal strength display allows the user to monitor the amplitude of the amplified microphone signal. A side tone suppression circuit generates a side tone suppression signal in response to the amplified microphone signal. This side tone suppression signal is used to reduce excessive side tone from the telephone base. An adjustable gain amplifier amplifies the speaker signal supplied by the base for the handset speaker.

Telephone privacy device

A keyboard entry system is disclosed which comprises a keyboard which includes a plurality of letter keys, one for each letter of a selected language. The entry system responds to conventional sequential activation of individual keys by providing output signals indicative of the respective individual letters associated with the activated keys to an application program such as a word processor or printer control program. The keyboard entry system also responds to chords of simultaneously activated multiple keys by using these chords to retrieve stored words from a dictionary. It is the stored words rather than the entered chords which are applied as inputs to the application program. This system allows an operator to use both conventional sequential key entry techniques and chorded entry techniques for rapid data entry. Chords are detected by comparing a stored constant with the elapsed time between a key release and the immediately preceding key depression of an overlapping key. The overlapping keys are characterized as a chord when the elapsed time is greater than the stored constant. A biofeedback mechanism alerts the operator of inadvertent chords.
