The present disclosure is related to an occlusion device having a mesh structure. The occlusion device configured to transition between a two-dimensional configuration and a three-dimensional configuration. In the two-dimensional configuration and at rest, the occlusion device is flat or planar. In the three-dimensional configuration, the occlusion device defines an internal volume.

The present disclosure relates to an implantable device having a frame and a flow restrictor. The frame includes a central portion and an end portion on either end of the frame. The flow restrictor is disposed within a lumen of the frame. The flow restrictor is configured to transition between a collapsed configuration and a deployed configuration. The flow restrictor may include a porosity configured to reduce fluid flow through the flow restrictor without completely occluding fluid flow.

Method to construct variable-area capacitive transducers

A variable area capacitor with a flexible electrode responsive to a physical effect and a rigid electrode with a predetermined surface contour. The surface contour is dimensioned to provide a specific change in capacitance with deflection of the flexible electrode. A thin dielectric layer maintains a substantially fixed spacing between the two electrodes. Preferred embodiments include a pressure sensor, microphone and accelerometer. A differential transconductance amplifier detects changes of the variable capacitor in a low-impedance, bridge-like circuit and feeds back current to balance the bridge. The voltage that controls the feedback current is proportional to capacitance over a wide dynamic range.

A microactuator and method of operation is disclosed for use in actuating valves, electrical contacts, light beams, sensors and other elements between different actuation modes. An actuator member comprised of a shape memory alloy layer is mounted on an elastic substrate, and the proximal end of the actuator member is carried by a base. The shape memory alloy material is heated through its phase change transition temperature so that it deforms by changing volume to bend the distal end of the actuator member in a first direction relative to the base. Stress forces in the substrate oppose the bending movement, and when the shape change layer is cooled below the transition temperature the stress forces move the distal in a second direction which returns the shape change layer to its low temperature shape. Electrostatic forces are selectively applied between the actuator member and base for clamping the actuator member in one of its positions. In another embodiment a bistable actuator is provided in which the actuator member can be operated between two stable positions.

A method for fabricating a silicon membrane with predetermined stress characteristics. A silicon substrate is doped to create a doped layer as thick as the desired thickness of the membrane. Stress within the doped layer is controlled by selecting the dopant based on its atomic diameter relative to silicon and controlling both the total concentration and concentration profile of the dopant. The membrane is then formed by electrochemically etching away the substrate beneath the doped layer.

A high resolution shadow mask with low pattern distortion is formed from a silicon membrane with a pattern of apertures etched through the membrane by reactive ion etching using a silicon dioxide masking layer. To achieve low distortion over a large area membrane, the stress of the membrane and the masking layer is controlled to remain within an optimal range so that the stress relief that occurs when the apertures are formed is kept negligibly small. A silicon membrane with controlled stress is made using a p/n junction electrochemical etch-stop process. After making the membrane, it is then coated with a deposited silicon dioxide layer. The stress of the oxide layer may be adjusted to an optimum value by annealing after deposition. The membrane with the oxide mask layer is next coated with a photoresist layer which is then patterned with the desired shadow mask pattern. Once the photoresist is patterned, the pattern is then transferred into the oxide layer by reactive ion etching. The patterned oxide then serves as the mask for etching apertures through the silicon membrane, also done by reactive ion etching.
