Methods, systems, and apparatus for restricting use of a network element outside an authorized location range are disclosed. In one aspect a method includes obtaining, for a network element of a passive optical network, an identifier and ranging information corresponding to a present location of the network element; identifying, from a database and based on the identifier of the network element, stored ranging information specifying a previous location of the network element; determining, based on a comparison of the ranging information with the stored ranging information, that the location of the network element has changed more than a specified amount; and outputting an alert in response to determining that the location of the network element has changed more than a specified amount.

Managing network access based on ranging information

Embodiments of the present disclosure generally pertain to systems and methods for reducing RF interference in communication systems. A communication system in accordance with an exemplary embodiment of the present disclosure comprises an element management system (EMS) communicating through a network with a plurality of network access devices. The EMS is configured to manage at least one network access device such that the device refrains from communicating data or reduces a data rate within a frequency range of a nearby interferer during time periods when interfering activity of the interferer is increased. Accordingly, the effects of RF interference for signals communicated by the device is reduced and degradation of service is prevented to an extent.

In accordance with a non-limiting example, an Optical Network Unit (ONU) includes an optical transmitter that has a laser diode and laser driver connected to the laser diode and configured to drive the laser diode so that the laser diode emits an optical communications signal based on transmit data signals. A feedback circuit includes a monitoring photodiode that receives optical feedback signals from the laser diode. A watchdog circuit is connected to the monitoring photodiode and laser driver and includes a logic circuit configured to process the feedback signals and transmit signals to determine if the ONU is rogue. This logic circuit in one example is an XOR logic circuit.

The present disclosure generally pertains to systems and methods for diagnosing loop anomalies for bonded-loop communication media. In one exemplary embodiment of the present disclosure, a communication medium comprises a plurality of bonded loops that couple network communication equipment (e.g., communication equipment at a central office) to customer premises (CP) communication equipment residing at a customer premises. If communication occurring over one of the loops becomes significantly degraded (e.g., if the SNR of the loop falls below a predefined threshold or id communication across the loop is interrupted), then loop diagnostic logic at the customer premises performs a diagnostic test on the loop. Information indicative of the diagnostic test is then communicated to the network equipment via one of the other bonded loops. Thus, the network service provider is able to receive information indicative of the diagnostic test without having to send a technician to the customer premises.

Systems and methods for diagnosing anomalies along bonded loop communication media

Relatively low cost asymmetric digital subscriber line (ADSL) service and auxiliary POTS service are delivered over extended distances (e.g., at least 20&#x2013;25 kft), by a hybrid ADSL-SDSL architecture insertable between central office and remote sites of an ADSL system. Central office and remote site transceivers employ trellis coded pulse amplitude modulation and a data rate that conforms with the signal transport capability of an extended distance symmetric DSL (SDSL) loop, while providing a 64K POTS channel. The central office and remote site transceivers controllably insert idle asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) cells in upstream and downstream ADSL channels to compensate for timing differences with ADSL equipment.

A sub (half)-rate DDS channel transport network architecture is configured to drive each of a ISDN transceiver unit of an OCU DP at one end of a two-wire path and the ISDN transceiver unit of a DDS termination unit at an opposite end of the two-wire path at one-half the normal clock rate, which reduces the operating frequency for rates of 56 kbps and 64 kbps. This sub-rate operation decreases its vulnerability to interference sources such as bridge taps. It also offers a trade-off against loop loss, enabling the effective range of the two-wire DDS circuit to be geographically extended, while complying with applicable industry standards for loop deployment and testing.

The transmission distance for DDS subscriber lines over a repeaterless four-wire link is extended to customer premises beyond the standard four-wire loop range of approximately 18 kft (56 kbps, 56 kbps with secondary channel capability, and 64 kbps) by employing commercially available ISDN transceiver chip hardware to multiplex a DDS data channel into quarter-rate (2B1Q) ISDN channels. At least one of a signalling channel and an out-of-band maintenance channel is used to convey differential delay compensation information, without modifying the framing structure of the transported channels, or requiring additional bandwidth for a separate framing channel.

An arbitration mechanism is distributed among channel units of a statistically multiplexed frame relay switching system serving a plurality of access lines, the cumulative bandwidth of which exceeds that of an aggregate data link over which data is to be transported. For each access line, an arbitration code is generated. This code includes a transmit request or start bit, a calculated multibit arbitration value based upon a combination of parameters, including queuing delay and the configuration and traffic rate of the line, and an address code that identifies the physical location of the respective channel unit. All arbitration codes are readable by each frame relay channel unit via a wire-ORed bus. A channel unit participating in an arbitration cycle compares the value of its arbitration code with those of the other participants. That channel unit whose arbitration code is uniquely the largest of all arbitration participants takes ownership of the aggregate data link, transmits data, and then releases the link.

Arbitration mechanism for statistically multiplexed frame relay switching system

A simple network management protocol (SNMP) agent is distributed among individual channel units of frame relay switching system, rather than in a proxy device. The SNMP agent is implemented by encoding the identity of an individual channel device for whom a data packet is intended in the community data string portion of an SNMP packet. For a read request, the address of a channel unit is encoded as an augmented community string, such as &ldquo;public.&num;&rdquo;. For a write request, the address is encoded as an augmented community string, such as &ldquo;private.&num;&rdquo;.
