Chromate-free and metal phosphate free treatments and compositions for applying a conversion or passivation coating for metals, more particularly, steel, zinc coated steel, and aluminum surfaces. The methods of the invention comprise contacting the requisite metal surface with a treatment composition comprising a member or members comprising one or more Group IV B elements, fluoride, and phosphonic acid or phosphonate. Optionally, a silane may be added as a treatment component.

Rinsable metal pretreatment methods and compositions

Methods and compositions are provided for corrosion inhibition treatment of aqueous systems such as cooling water systems. The methods include conjoint use of a polyvalent metal ion, such as Al or Mn and a corrosion inhibitor/deposit control agent (DCA) to the water system. The corrosion inhibitor DCA agent may be an organic compound such as a hydroxyacid, phosphonocarboxylic acid, polyhydroxysuccinic acid, or polymaleic acid or anhydride.

Compositions and methods for inhibiting corrosion in aqueous media

Methods are provided to inhibit corrosion of metals in contact with aqueous systems such as cooling water systems. In accordance with the methods, a hydroxyacid compound and orthophosphates are used to treat the system. Additionally, an adjuvant including poly(epoxysuccinic acids), an additional hydroxy acid, and a polycarboxylic acid, may be added to the system water.

A method of cleaning metal surfaces by using a composition of citric acid, a hydroxycarboxylic acid salt, a nonionic surfactant and a coupling agent is used for cleaning metal surfaces and methods of using the same.

A method of providing color to a polyacrylamide based, dried-in-place, non-chromate conversion coating is provided. The addition of a phthalo green pigment and optionally a nonionic surfactant to an aqueous, dried-in-place conversion coating treatment solution provides for a colored conversion coating without adversely affecting the corrosion resistance or adhesion properties of the conversion coating.

The aqueous treatment solution contains from 0.1 to 10 grams per liter of a fluorometallic acid, from 0.015 to 6 grams per liter of a salt of a transition metal, from 1 to 30 grams per liter zinc; and optionally from 0.1 to 3 grams per liter a polymer of acrylic acid, methacrylic acid, or an ester thereof with a C1 to C8 alkanol.
