The present invention provides for novel solid state O -selective metal complex-based adsorbents and their utility for separating oxygen from a gas stream. In particular, the invention provides for an adsorption complex which contains four-coordinate O -selective metal complexes including oligomeric/polymeric metal complexes, and organic base-containing polymers supported on porous materials.

Oxygen-selective adsorbents

Carbon dioxide is removed from gas streams comprised predominantly of gases that are less strongly adsorbed than is carbon dioxide by passing the gas stream through a bed of type X zeolite having a silicon to aluminum atomic ratio not greater than about 1.15 and at least 75% of the exchangeable cations of which are potassium ions, thereby adsorbing the carbon dioxide from the gas stream. The process is particularly advantageous when applied to the removal of low levels of carbon dioxide from gas streams at temperatures of about 0 to 80&deg; C.

Removal of carbon dioxide from gas streams

Zeolites in particulate form that are uniformly exchanged with both lithium ions and trivalent cations are produced by first partially ion-exchanging the zeolite in powdered form with one or more selected trivalent ions, then agglomerating and calcining the partially trivalent cation-exchanged zeolite, then ion-exchanging the calcined agglomerate with lithium ions, and finally activating the trivalent cation- and lithium ion-exchanged zeolite.

Preparation of ion-exchanged zeolites

Applicants have developed a unique process for preparing a shaped article comprising an ion exchange composition and a hydroxy oxide binder. The ion exchange compositions include metallotitanates, metallogermanates, pillared clays and metal phosphonates. The process involves combining the ion exchange composition with a binder precursor and water, forming the mixture into a shaped article and heating the article at a temperature of about 85.degree. C. to about 120.degree. C. These shaped articles are useful for removing metal ions such as cesium from feed streams.

Novel, hollow, low-density agglomerates for use in sealed insulating glass windows to adsorb water vapor, and optionally organic materials, present in the cavity between the two glazings. These agglomerates provide sufficient but not excessive amounts of zeolitic and other adsorbents when used to fill all portions of the spacer tube located at the peripheral sides of the double glazed unit, thereby greatly facilitating the filling of such spacer tubes and the fabrication of the overall unit.

Agglomerates of zeolitic molecular sieves which are bonded with particles of generally spherical amorphous colloidal-sized silica particles having nominal diameters in the range of 40 to 800 nanometers are found to have increased adsorption capacity for many molecular species due to the development in the binder of a pore system created by the packing of the silica spheres. When the molecular sieves employed are highly siliceous and hydrophobic, the agglomerates are ideally suited for use in odor elimination applications in which unagglomerated molecular sieve particles create dusting and handling problems.
