Processing a read request to read metadata from an entry of a metadata page may include: determining whether the metadata page is cached; responsive to determining the metadata page is cached, obtaining the first metadata from the cached metadata page; responsive to determining the metadata page is not cached, determining whether the requested metadata is in a metadata log of metadata changes stored in a volatile memory; and responsive to determining the metadata is the metadata log of metadata changes stored in the volatile memory, obtaining the requested metadata from the metadata log. Processing a write request that overwrites an existing value of a metadata page with an updated value may include: recording a metadata change in the metadata log that indicates to update the metadata page with the updated value; and performing additional processing during destaging that uses the existing value prior to overwriting it with the updated value.

A current asynchronous replication cycle is initiated at a time-based interval based upon a replication policy of the storage system to replicate data from at least one source device to at least one target device. For the current asynchronous replication cycle, it is determined whether data stored on portions of the source device has changed from a previous asynchronous replication cycle. A new replica of the source device is generated if data stored on the source device has changed from the previous asynchronous replication cycle. The new replica is transferred to the target device. The current asynchronous replication cycle is completed and the replication policy of the storage system is satisfied without generating the new replica if data stored on the source device has not changed from the previous asynchronous replication cycle.

Augmenting virtual directories

The present invention provides a system and method for handling large transactions by a storage virtualization system. Current storage virtualization systems can only manage a limited number of data objects stored on an associated NAS system because of the cost or hardware constraints of physical main memory. The present invention will enable a storage virtualization system to increase the number of data objects managed by a factor of five or more by using an associated secondary memory store, such as a disk, to store information or metadata about data objects stored on associated NAS systems. The invention also provides a method for moving metadata from the storage virtualization system memory to the secondary store and back, and recovering metadata if corrupted. The invention thereby increases the number of data objects handled by the storage virtualization system with negligible loss of performance as perceived by clients of the storage virtualization system.

System and method for handling large transactions in a storage virtualization system

This disclosure describes a system and method for providing I/O scheduling capabilities to a host server executing one or more virtual machine clients and communicating with a cloud-based storage array. An I/O scheduler executing on a virtual machine can identify priority tags associated with requests or commands on the virtual machine. The I/O scheduler can create one or more queues based upon the priority of each request, and can then transmit requests in order of priority. The I/O scheduler can also use information about the storage array, such as layout information or cache information, and can accordingly optimize the transmission of requests to the storage array.

The present invention is a method for performing a multi-protocol scan of a NAS system by a storage virtualization system to create a multi-protocol file index. Current NAS systems may utilize two protocols, CIFS and NFS. Storage virtualization systems migrate, redirect or synchronize data between a primary and a secondary NAS. Present storage virtualization systems are designed to work with NFS or CIFS systems, but not both. The present invention enables a storage virtualization system to simultaneously or near-simultaneously operate using NFS and CIFS protocols.
