An insulator for supporting the inner conductor of a gas insulated transmission line is configured so that its outer extremity is a simple blunt portion that fits loosely within a bearing block of insulating material of lower dielectric constant than the insulator itself so as to provide structural simplicity and improved performance through lessened breakdown susceptibility. A cylindrical particle trap ring formed of flexible metal sheet material is attached to the bearing block at locations spaced from the insulator.

A gas-insulated transmission line includes an outer sheath and an inner conductor disposed therein, which inner conductor is formed from two inner conductor sections electrically connected together. A contact shield surrounds and electrically shields the connection of the two inner conductor sections. Insulating supports spatially support the contact shield within the outer sheath, and the contact shield physically supports the inner conductor sections. The insulating supports thus support the inner conductor through the contact shield.

Insulating spacer design for a modular gas-insulated transmission line

An improved gas-insulated transmission line is disclosed in which the transmission line itself is constructed in a modular fashion from elements which are joined together, typically at the final installation location, to form the transmission line. The other sheath and the inner conductor can be fabricated separately, at different locations and by different manufacturers, and transmitted to the point of final assembly and installation. A backup ring, insulator support assembly, contact shield, and connection member are separately fabricated into a single modular member, which can by itself be subjected to the testing procedures normally undertaken at the factory. This modular member, after satisfactorily passing its acceptance test, can then be shipped to the installation site. The installation of the transmission line, and formation thereof, can then be performed by inserting the inner conductor into the connection member portion of the modular member, and the outer sheath segments can then be physically connected to the backup ring portion of the modular member to form the transmission line.

A gas-insulated transmission line includes an outer sheath, an inner conductor, an insulating gas electrically insulating the inner conductor from the outer sheath, and insulating supports insulatably supporting the inner conductor within the outer sheath. The inner conductor is provided with flexibility by use of main conductor sections which are joined together through a conductor hub section and flexible flexing elements. Stress shields are provided to control the electric field at the locations of the conductor hub sections where the insulating supports are contacting the inner conductor. The flexing elements and the stress shields may also be utilized in connection with a plug and socket arrangement for providing electrical connection between main conductor sections.

Semi-flexible gas-insulated transmission line using electric field

A gas insulated transmission line includes an inner conductor disposed within an outer sheath, with an insulating gas providing electrical insulation and insulating supports holding the inner conductor within the outer sheath. A particle trapping ring is disposed within but spaced apart from the outer sheath, and a flexible insulating sheet is secured to the particle trapping ring. The insulating sheet has an adhesive coating disposed thereon facing the ring, and the insulating sheet is positioned on the interior surface of the outer sheath. An insulating leaf spring, preformed along the radius of curvature of the outer sheath, is secured to the ring and is positioned between the insulating sheet and the ring, with the leaf spring loading the insulating sheet against the outer sheath. A stiffener spring is also secured to the ring and is disposed intermediate the ring and the leaf spring. The stiffener spring preloads the leaf spring and the insulating sheet outwardly away from the ring and towards the outer sheath.

A weld-joint in a segmented sheath of a large diameter, high voltage, compressed gas insulated transmission line includes longitudinal, radially aligned outer margins forming a longitudinal seam of joined sheath sections, an internally disposed recess offset from the joined margins, a longitudinal tongue overlapping the joined outer margins and mating with the recess, and a longitudinal sealing gasket, preferably an elastomeric tube, disposed in the region between the tongue and the tongue-receiving recess. A hollowed cutaway section is provided within the joint and aligned with the radial margins to form an enclosed cavity. A longitudinal ridge is provided along the sealing gasket for spacing and protecting the gasket. The end of the tongue and the adjacent walls of the internally disposed recess form together a Vee groove for trapping loose particles internal of the tubular enclosure formed by the joined sheath sections. The enclosed cavity and sealing gasket promote a strong, full penetration weld along the seam.

A gas filled bushing having an insulating shell and a centrally disposed bushing conductor. Flexible means integrally formed with the flange ring are utilized to control the compression of sealing means against the insulating shell to minimize the leakage of gas through the joint between the flange ring and the porcelain or epoxy insulating shell, without using excessive force which might break the insulating shell.

A spacer mount for use in gas insulated transmission lines is comprised of two parts, each of which has a radially inwardly extending nub, and at least one of which has a longitudinally extending section to which the other member is secured. The two nubs are spaced apart a distance substantially equal to the longitudinal width of the spacer which is mounted therebetween.

Gas-insulated electrical apparatus including a generally vertically disposed air termination, a horizontally disposed gas-insulated transmission line, and a transition member aligned with both the termination and the transmission line for interconnecting the transmission line to the termination. Termination support means are utilized for spatially maintaining the termination in its location, and these support means are fixedly secured to the transition member and slidingly supported on a base member. The sliding support compensates for linear thermal expansion of the transmission line while maintaining the support of the termination.

A contact assembly for electrically connecting two electrical conductors wherein a plug member is secured to one conductor, and a hollow socket member is secured to the other conductor, with the plug being received by the socket member. The socket member has an annular recess therein, and a plurality of contact fingers are disposed within the recess. A holder is also disposed within the recess, and the holder has an axial projection extending therefrom adjacent the contact fingers radially outwardly therefrom. The holder projection and the holder are spaced apart from the socket member to form an annular space therebetween. Resilient biasing means are disposed between the contact fingers and the holder and acts upon the contact fingers, and loading means are utilized to produce a force upon the contact fingers. The force has a component in the radial direction and a larger component in the axial direction, producing respectively contact pressure between the fingers and the plug member and the fingers and the socket member.

High current contact assembly

A gas insulated transmission line section wherein an inner conductor at high potential is located within an outer sheath at low potential. An insulating gas is disposed within the outer sheath to electrically insulate the inner conductor from the outer sheath. A support insulator is disposed within the outer sheath, and this support insulator supports the inner conductor in a spaced-apart relationship with the outer sheath. Included is a barrier insulator which also supports the inner conductor within the outer sheath. The barrier insulator substantially fills the cross-sectional area between the inner conductor and the outer sheath so as to prevent substantially all arc products and contamination produced in the unlikely event of a fault from migrating past the barrier insulator. By so preventing the migration of these products, the gas insulated transmission line section is effectively compartmentalized and these products cannot contaminate adjacent transmission line sections.

A gas-insulated transmission line including an elongated cylindrical outer sheath and an elongated cylindrical inner conductor disposed within the outer sheath. An insulating gas is disposed within the outer sheath for insulating the inner conductor from the outer sheath, and means are included for insulatively supporting the inner conductor within the outer sheath. Means for trapping particles which may be present within the outer sheath are included, and comprise a base member secured to the outer sheath about the periphery of an opening which is cut within the outer sheath, a mounting member secured to the base member and directed towards the inner conductor, and a trapping member fixedly secured to the mounting member.

Gas-insulated electrical apparatus with field-installable particle traps

A gas-insulated transmission line including an outer sheath, an inner conductor within the outer sheath, an insulating gas disposed within the outer sheath for electrically insulating the inner conductor from the outer sheath, and insulating supports for supporting the inner conductor within the outer sheath. A particle trap is utilized for trapping and deactivating particles within the transmission line, with the trap being spaced apart from the outer sheath at least at some portion thereof. A resilient seal is disposed at the longitudinal edges of the particle trap to prevent the particles within the trap from moving out of it.
