An access node of a communication system is configured to control crosstalk between channels of the system. A set of L distinct and linearly independent pilot signals is generated, with each pilot signal having length n, where n&#x3e;L such that n&#x2212;L linearly independent n-tuples are available for use in detection and correction of impulse noise. In an illustrative embodiment, the L pilot signals are mutually orthogonal. The L pilot signals are transmitted over respective ones of the channels, and one or more of the pilot signals as received over their respective channels are processed to detect the presence of impulse noise. A crosstalk estimate corrected for the detected impulse noise is generated and utilized to control crosstalk between two or more of the channels.

Various methods and devices are provided to address the need for improved data transmission with coherence interval user selection. In one method, a transmit group to which to transmit during a first coherence time interval is selected. The transmit group is selected () from a plurality of users for which there is data to transmit during the first coherence time interval. The data associated with users in the transmit group is transmitted () to the transmit group during the first coherence time interval. Subsequent transmit groups to which to transmit during subsequent coherence time intervals are also selected (). A user of the plurality of users is selected for transmission over the course of the first coherence time interval and the subsequent coherence time intervals with a predetermined probability.

Techniques are disclosed for compensating for crosstalk using adaptation of data signals transmitted over respective channels of a communication network. In one example, a method comprises the following steps. Data is transmitted to a communication network device via a communication line during a sequence of periods. For each period of the sequence of periods, a separate value of a measure of crosstalk that was measured at the communication network device is received, each value being an average of measurements at the device of measures of crosstalk for a plurality of communication network signal subcarriers. For each individual signal subcarrier of the plurality, a matrix is updated based on the received values, the matrix being configured to precode data transmissions to the communication network device over the individual signal subcarrier. The communication network may be a DSL system, the signal subcarriers may be DSL tones, and the measure of crosstalk may be a SINR value.

The present invention relates to a communication system and method for transmitting sync flags and pilot symbols during sync symbol periods. Example embodiments provide a method for sharing sync symbols to communicate flag sequences and pilot sequences during a sequence of sync symbol periods. The method includes modulating the pilot sequence by multiplying a pilot code by each value of the pilot sequence, and modulating the flag sequence by multiplying a flag code by each value of the flag sequence. The pilot and flag codes are mutually orthogonal to each other and each includes at least two non-zero values. The method further includes generating a resulting sync symbol sequence based on the modulated pilot sequence and modulated flag sequence, and sending the resulting sync symbol sequence during the sync symbol period.

An access node of a communication system is configured to control crosstalk between channels of the system. Vectoring circuitry in the access node estimates crosstalk between channels of the system, generates a compensation matrix based on the crosstalk estimates, and generates compensated signals based on the compensation matrix. The compensation matrix, which may be a precoder matrix or a postcoder matrix, is generated using a multiplicative update process in which a previous version of the compensation matrix comprising one or more non-zero off-diagonal elements is updated by at least one of pre-multiplying by a first auxiliary matrix and post-multiplying by a second auxiliary matrix, with a given one of the auxiliary matrices also comprising one or more non-zero off-diagonal elements. The compensated signals may be pre-compensated signals or post-compensated signals.

An access node of a communication system comprises a plurality of transmitters adapted for communication with at least one receiver over a plurality of channels. The access node is operative to obtain estimated crosstalk coefficients between a joining channel and an active channel, and to set a power level of at least one signal transmitted over the joining channel based on the estimated crosstalk coefficients. The access node obtains the estimated crosstalk coefficients by first obtaining a subset of the estimated crosstalk coefficients and subsequently determining additional ones of the estimated crosstalk coefficients by applying an interpolation process to the estimated crosstalk coefficients in the subset. The access node sets the power level of the signal transmitted over the joining channel in a manner that ensures maintenance of a desired performance characteristic for the active channel.

At least one channel is joined to a group of active channels in a communication system by transmitting control signals to configure respective customer premises equipment (CPE) of the active channels into a joining mode of operation, and transmitting a joining signature sequence to CPE of the joining channel over a downstream data signal path of the joining channel. A central office (CO) or other access node of the system receives correlation results from respective active channel CPE, estimates crosstalk from the joining channel into the active channels based on the correlation results, configures a precoder based on the estimated crosstalk, and adds the joining channel to the group of active channels. The channels may comprise respective subscriber lines of a DSL communication system.

Techniques are disclosed that efficiently obtain channel crosstalk estimates in DSL systems and other communication systems that may include unsynchronized channels. For example, a method includes obtaining a first set of estimated measures of crosstalk for a first portion of a plurality of communication channels over which data signals are to be transmitted from a transmitter to a plurality of receivers, and interpolating a second set of estimated measures of crosstalk for a second portion of the plurality of communication channels based on the first set of estimated measures of crosstalk. The first portion of the plurality of communication channels may be a subset of the plurality of communication channels and the second portion of the plurality of communication channels is a remainder of the plurality of communication channels. Each estimated measure of crosstalk may relate to at least one tone associated with at least one of the plurality of communication channels.

Interpolation method and apparatus for increasing efficiency of crosstalk estimation

Techniques and systems for planning of wireless networks are described. A system according to an aspect of the present invention receives inputs describing traffic statistics for a wireless network and computes network specifications. The system uses the traffic statistics and network specifications as inputs to a computationally tractable model used to compute parameters for the user level performance of the wireless network. The model may suitably be a processor sharing queuing model. The model employed by the planning system allows analytical solution for the desired user level parameters, given the characteristics and conditions entered as inputs and the intended network layout characteristics. Once a set of user level performance parameters has been computed, the values of the parameters are examined to determine if they meet predetermined requirements, in an iterative process continuing until a set of specifications has been developed that produces parameters meeting the requirements.

Methods and apparatus for planning wireless data networks using analytical modeling of user level performance

An access node of a communication system is configured to generate denoised crosstalk estimates for respective channels of the system and to adjust power levels of signals transmitted over one or more of the channels based on the denoised crosstalk estimates. The access node obtains crosstalk estimates for the respective channels. The access node is configured to convert the crosstalk estimate for a given channel to a discrete transform domain, to substantially eliminate in the discrete transform domain one or more designated portions of the crosstalk estimate for the given channel, and to convert remaining portions of the crosstalk estimate for the given channel back from the discrete transform domain to obtain the corresponding denoised crosstalk estimate for the given channel. The access node may comprise one or more central offices of a DSL communication system.
