A cleansing and disinfecting composition comprising an alkaline per-salt and a positively charged phase-transfer agent. The composition preferably also contains a surfactant. The alkaline per-salt is an alkaline water-soluble salt having hydrogen peroxide of crystallization. The positively charged phase-transfer agent is preferably a quaternary ammonium salt. The composition may be formulated as a cream, a bulk powder, a solution or tablets. It may also be incorporated in wipes, sponges and brushes. The compositions of this invention find utility in health care, as disinfectants in surgical applications, and as decontaminating agents. Specific uses include skin cleansing and disinfecting, treatment for exposure to toxic plants such as poison ivy, treatment for exposure to industrial and agricultural chemicals such as herbicides and pesticides, and cleansing and disinfecting surfaces and sensitive equipment.

Cleansing and disinfecting compositions

A decontaminating composition and delivery system therefor. The decontaminating composition is prepared by combining a 'per-salt', an activator for hydrogen peroxide which effects free radical formation, both of which are in a dry form and an aqueous solution comprised of a nonvolatile alcohol and a surface active agent. The 'per-salt' of the present invention is a basic water-soluble salt such as percarbonate, perborate, persilicate or perphosphate which releases hydrogen peroxide in aqueous solution. While not true per-salts in the strict chemical sense, they are otherwise conventional salts containing hydrogen peroxide of crystallization which is released in aqueous solution. The decontaminating composition and delivery system comprise a dispenser containing, in separate compartments, the various components as aforesaid which are thoroughly mixed prior to being dispensed onto the surface to be treated.

Decontaminating composition and delivery system therefor

The composition preferably also contains one or more surfactants. The alkaline per-salt is an alkaline water-soluble salt having hydrogen peroxide of crystallization. The positively charged phase-transfer agent is preferably a quaternary ammonium salt. The composition may be formulated as a cream, a bulk powder, a solution or tablets. It ay also be incorporated in wipes, sponges and brushes. In one embodiment, one surface of the impregnated sponge is an abrasive material. The compositions of this invention find utility in health care, as disinfectants in surgical applications, and as cleansing and decontaminating agents. Specific uses include skin cleansing and disinfecting, treatment for exposure to toxic plants such as poison ivy, treatment for exposure to industrial and agricultural chemicals such as herbicides and pesticides, and cleansing and disinfecting surfaces and sensitive equipment. The impregnated sponges may be stored indefinitely and activated by the addition of water. They are adapted to being dispensed for on-the-spot use as stain or spot removers and may include bleaching or whitening agents.

Process and apparatus for the detection of hydrazine and hydrazine derivatives. For the detection of hydrazine and volatile hydrazine derivatives in air, preferred is a detector tube having iodate or periodate ion in a reactor zone and an iodine sensitive colorimetric indicator in a separate indicator zone. The colorimetric indicator may be an addition-complex type indicator, a redox sensitive dye precursor or an iodination type dye precursor. The hydrazine or hydrazine derivative contacts the iodate or periodate ion in the reactor zone to form iodine which diffuses or is drawn into the indicator zone where it contacts the indicator which then undergoes a color change. In a particularly preferred embodiment of the detector tube, an oxidizing metal ion is present in the reactor zone and, when a redox sensitive indicator is employed, in the indicator zone. The oxidizing metal ion in the reactor zone reacts with excess iodide ion to prevent its reaction with iodine to form the nonvolatile triiodide ion which, if formed, precludes diffusion of iodine into the indicator portion of the detector tube. The oxidizing metal ion in the indicator zone oxidizes iodide ion, formed as a result of the reaction of iodine with a redox sensitive indicator, back to iodine. The iodine thus formed is free to react with more of the indicator, thus enhancing sensitivity.
