This invention pertains to a composition including tobacco or a tobacco substitute and a compound represented by formula (1): ##STR1## wherein R is selected from the group consisting of branched and unbranched lower-alkyl and lower-cycloalkyl groups having from 1 to 10 carbon atoms. The present invention also provides methods for flavoring smoking compositions, which incorporate the novel alkyl sclareol diol carbonates of the invention.

The method is directed to the preparation of dodecohydro-3a,6,6,9a-tetramethyl-naphtho[2,1-b]furan from sclareol using an alkoxy-radical fragmentation reaction. A novel 9-haloethyl decalin derivative is an intermediate in this method.

Method for preparing

This invention pertains to compounds represented by formula (1): ##STR1## wherein R is selected from the group consisting of branched and unbranched lower-alkyl and lower-cycloalkyl groups having from 1 to 10 carbon atoms. The present invention also provides smoking compositions, and methods for flavoring smoking compositions, which incorporate the novel alkyl sclareol diol carbonates of the invention.

The method is directed to the preparation of dodecahydro-3a,6,6,9a-tetramethyl-naphtho[2,1-b]furan from sclareol using an alkoxy-radical fragmentation reaction. A novel 9-haloethyl decalin derivative is an intermediate in this method.

The present invention provides organoleptic compositions which upon thermolyis, hydrolysis or both, release an odorant molecule. They find utility, for example, in tobacco, in tobacco paper, and as additives to food, beverages or gum. The compositions contain one or more dicarboalkoxy dioxolane derivatives having the following formula: ##STR1## wherein R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 are, independently, --CO.sub.2 R.sup.3 wherein R.sup.3 is --H.sub.3 or lower alkyl, provided that in at least one of R.sup.1 and R.sup.2, R.sup.3 is lower alkyl; wherein Z is a direct bond, or --CH.dbd.C(R.sup.4)--; where R.sup.4 is --H or alkyl group; and Y is ##STR2## where R.sup.5 and R.sup.6 are independently --H, lower alkyl or --OR.sup.7 where R.sup.7 is --H or lower alkyl.

Organoleptic compositions

The present invention relates to novel substituted cyclohexanol compounds possessing a sandalwood aroma which are useful as fragrance materials. The invention also provides methods for synthesis thereof through a novel aldehyde intermediate. The compounds of the invention have the formula: ##STR1## wherein A is ##STR2## and wherein R.sub.1 is methyl or ethyl, R.sub.2 -R.sub.7 are independently hydrogen or methyl with the proviso that a maximum of two of the substituents R.sub.2 -R.sub.7 are methyl, and R.sub.8 is hydrogen, lower alkyl (C.sub.1 to C.sub.5) or acyl. The invention also provides fragrance compositions which utilize the compounds of the invention to impart a sandalwood aroma to perfume compositions, colognes and perfumed articles.

Sandalwood odorants

This invention provides novel cyclic acetals useful as delayed release flavorants and odorants having the general formula: ##STR1## These compounds possess no detectable flavor or odor themselves at normal temperatures and atmospheric conditions but release an aldehyde flavorant upon heating at higher temperatures. The novel cyclic acetals of the present invention may be used as flavorants in tobacco compositions or tobacco substitutes, as sustained flavorants and odorants to mask or enhance the flavors and odors of burning tobacco products, as flavor additives to microwaveable foods, and in the preparation of chewing gums.

These compounds are dicarboalkoxy dioxolane derivatives having the following formula: ##STR1## wherein R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 are, independently, --CO.sub.2 R.sup.3 wherein R.sup.3 is --H.sub.3 or lower alkyl, provided that in at least one of R.sup.1 and R.sup.2, R.sub.4 is lower alkyl; wherein Z is a direct bond, or --CH.dbd.C(R.sup.4)--; where R.sup.4 is an alkyl group; and Y is, when Z is a direct bond, ##STR2## where R.sup.5 is lower alkyl; and Y, when Z is --CH.dbd.C(R.sup.4)--, ##STR3## where R.sup.6 is H, lower alkyl or OR.sup.7, where R.sup.7 is H or lower alkyl.

Dicarboalkoxy dioxolane derivatives

Menthyl pyran compounds are provided repesented by the formula 1: ##STR1## wherein R is H or lower acyl or 1-3 carbon atoms; R' is H, hydroxyl, or C.sub.1-3 acyloxy, and the dotted line represents an optional double bond. Use of the compounds provides a menthol note upon pyrolysis or hydrolysis. Smoking compositions containing a compound of formula 1 are also included.

This invention provides oxygen or sulfur containing compounds possessing fruity, floral, or woody odors. These compounds may be used to fragrance or flavor a variety of consumer products such as tobacco products, foodstuffs, beverages, gums, mouthwashes, toothpastes, cosmetics, pharmaceutical preparations, and medicinal products. The disclosure also provides a process for the preparation of these compounds.

Sulfur containing acyclic terpenes

Novel Oxo-ionol derivatives are described which have a but-1-en-3-ol carbonate side chain. These derivatives are stable tobacco enhancers which impart a slight hay-like flavor to tobacco smoke.

Multimethyl cyclohexene or cyclohexane derivatives having woody, spicy, amber or violet odors are disclosed. The derivatives can be formualted into perfumes, talcs, lotions, cremes and air fresheners.
