An internal combustion engine comprising an engine block, a crankshaft rotatably supported by the block and including an axis, a first portion which is cylindrical in shape, which is concentric with the axis, and which has a uniform radius, and a second portion extending from the first portion in concentric relation thereto and having a radius less than the radius of the first portion to define a radially extending shoulder on the first portion, a flywheel including a surface engaging the shoulder, and a central aperture receiving the second portion of the crankshaft and having a radius less then the radius of the first portion, and bolts extending through the flywheel and into the first portion of the crankshaft for securing the flywheel to the crankshaft.

An internal combustion engine comprising an engine block including an outer surface, structure including the engine block and a member connected to the surface of the engine block for defining a substantially closed chamber, a crankshaft extending from the engine block and into the chamber, a flywheel located in the chamber, connected to the crankshaft, and including thereon a starter gear, a stator located in the chamber and fixed to the engine block, a magnet or magnets located in the chamber and fixed to the flywheel for rotation therewith in a path adjacent to the stator, a finned coolant jacket located in the chamber and adapted to be connected to a source of coolant exterior to the chamber, structure on the flywheel for creating air flow in a path extending between the stator and the coolant jacket, a starter motor mounted on the block exteriorly of the chamber and including an output shaft extending into the chamber through the member, and a mechanism locatd in the chamber, drivingly connected to the output shaft, and engageable with the starter gear in response to output shaft rotation to rotate the flywheel.

Marine propulsion device internal combustion engine

A marine propulsion device includes an engine having an alternator for charging a storage battery. A voltage regulator and rectifier is connected in circuit between the alternator and the storage battery and is disposed within a housing in heat exchange relation with cooling liquid disposed in a water jacket of the engine. The regulator and rectifier are driven by the storage battery and a thermostatic switch is disposed in circuit between the battery and the regulator and rectifier for interrupting power thereto when the temperature of the regulator and rectifier exceeds a predetermined limit.

A marine propulsion device comprising a transom bracket adapted to be affixedly mounted on the transom of a boat, a propulsion unit mounted on the transom bracket for pivotal movement relative thereto about a generally horizontal tilt axis, an extendable and contractable link connected between the transom bracket and the propulsion unit for pivoting the propulsion unit about the tilt axis, and a mechanism for stopping pivotal movement of the propulsion unit in response to the position of the link relative to the propulsion unit.

Marine propulsion device tilt limit switch

A warning system for an internal combustion engine, such as a small displacement outboard marine engine or the like, which does not have a switched B.sup.+ supply line. A parallel rectifier is taken from the alternator of the starting circuit of an engine to provide an auxiliary power source to the warning system when the engine is operating. Another auxiliary power source is taken from the positive coil contact of the starter solenoid to provide power to the warning system when the engine is starting. The auxiliary power sources are connected to one terminal of an annunciator whose other terminal is connected to a common node. A plurality of parallel sensors including an over-temperature switch, a low oil switch, and a variable ratio oiler are connected between the common node and ground to sound the annunciator based on abnormal operating conditions of the engine. Alternative embodiments show an auxiliary power source for a single phase alternator and a multiple phase alternator, respectively.

Alternator powered motor warning system

The capacitor discharge ignition system for an internal combustion engine includes an ignition capacitor charged by a power supply and discharged through the primary of an ignition coil when a silicon controlled rectifier (SCR) becomes conductive in response to a trigger voltage is applied to the gate of the SCR. A resistor-capacitor delay circuit on the output of the SCR delays rapid discharge of the capacitor to thereby delay the spark at the spark plug in the secondary of the coil. A second SCR is connected to shunt the RC time delay to effectively advance the spark timing in response to predetermined engine speed.

Capacitor discharge ignition system for internal combustion engine

Disclosed herein is a capacitor discharge ignition system adapted for use with an internal combustion engine and comprising a charge capacitor, an ignition coil primary winding, an ignition SCR, and a spark retard circuit connected in series relationship with the charge capacitor, the primary winding, and the ignition SCR. The spark retard circuit comprises a thyristor having an anode-cathode path connected in series relationship with the charge capacitor, the primary winding, and the ignition SCR, an RC delay network including a capacitor and a resistor with a junction therebetween, the network having one end connected to the thyristor anode and having an opposite end connected to the thyristor gate, and a zener diode connected between the thyristor gate and the RC delay network junction for selectively preventing full discharge of the capacitor through the primary winding for a predetermined period of time after the ignition SCR is rendered conductive, thereby allowing for over advancing at mid rpm range and providing for automatic spark retard at higher engine rpm. In one embodiment of the invention a potentiometer replaces the resistor in the RC delay network to allow for further adjustment of ignition spark timing.

Disclosed herein is a capacitor discharge ignition system comprising a charge capacitor, an ignition coil primary winding, an ignition SCR, and an isolation circuit connected in circuit with the charge capacitor, the primary winding and the ignition SCR. The isolation circuit preferably comprises a thyristor having an anode, a cathode, and a gate, and having an anode-cathode path connected in series relationship with the charge capacitor, and a parallel RC network having one end connected to the thyristor anode and having an opposite end connected to the thyristor gate. The isolation circuit is operative for selectively isolating the primary winding and the ignition SCR from the charge capacitor to provide for immediate recharging of the charge capacitor after the charge capacitor has discharged through the primary winding to effect an ignition spark.
