A modular wheelchair assembly is adapted to be reconfigured between a fixed angle of tilt, a dynamically adjustable tilt-in-space configuration with the tilt axis being near the user's knees and a dynamically adjustable tilt-in-space configuration with the tilt axis being near the user's center of gravity. The reconfiguration is achieved by modifying a limited number of selectively removable components of the support assembly or the pivot assembly of the wheelchair.

A telescoping crossbar assembly for a wheelchair comprises an inner tube that is slidable within an outer tube. The head portion of a pass-through fastener bears on the inner tube through a sufficiently large head-side aperture so as to slightly deform the inner tube and to hold the two tubes by friction in mutual engagement.

A wheelchair with a tiltable seat locates the tilt fulcrum between 3 and 7 inches from the front edge of the seat pan and between 1 and 4 inches below the surface of the seat pan. This minimizes the elevation of the rider's knees when in a tilted position, and allows for more stability and a shorter wheel base. Manual self-tilting is facilitated by a gas strut arrangement disposed on brackets below the seat pan, and operated by a rider-controlled valve.

A wheelchair for large individuals includes front casters mounted substantially forward of the user's center of gravity. Front caster and rear wheels are mounted on the same rigid member. The rigid member is pivotally attached to the rear of the frame while the front includes suspension means extending between the rigid member and the frame. A side plate provides universal adjustability for positioning the backrest, for pivoting the armrests and for seat height and tilt adjustment. A telescoping tube engages the ground when the wheelchair is leaned back to prevent tipping.
