A method for treating anxiety disorders may include applying a first pair of electrodes on the left side of a subject's head and a second pair of electrodes on the right side of the subject's head; applying a first stimulus carrier of a first magnitude to the first pair of electrodes and a second stimulus carrier of a second magnitude to the second pair of electrodes, wherein the first and second stimulus carriers combine to produce a stimulus having a frequency between 1 Hz and 1 kHz; and steering the stimulus toward the subject's left amygdala.

A method for desynchronizing a pathological neural oscillations, includes identifying a first subpopulation of the neurons involved in the pathological neural oscillation that are in alignment with each other within a predetermined angular stimulation range, and a second subpopulation that are both (A) in alignment with each other within the predetermined angular stimulation range, and (B) out of alignment with the first neurons by at least the predetermined angular stimulation range, and applying electrical stimuli to the first and second subpopulations through scalp electrodes, the electrical stimuli being out of phase with the pathological neural oscillations for desynchronizing the pathological neural oscillations.

A method for using electrical stimulation for cerebral network analysis. A first source localization procedure is performed, including a first source measurement procedure which produces first source measurement data, using the first source measurement data to find a solution to a first ill-posed problem which provides a first estimated location of the source. The body is electrically stimulated by targeting the first estimated location, and a second, fast source measurement procedure producing second source measurement data is performed thereafter while measurable effects of the step of stimulating, on the source, still remain. The second source measurement data are compared with the first source measurement data for assessing an extent to which the first estimated location is correct.

Method for transcranial neurostimulation. A target of neurons for transcranial stimulation or modulation is located within an impedance model of the brain, a model of a selected device to be used for producing an electric or magnetic field outside the brain is obtained and used, along with the impedance model, to compute respective virtual target stimulating current vectors representing target stimulating currents that would result from using the device in two distinct trial dispositions of the device, an image of the cortical surface at the target is obtained and used to compute a target normal vector, and a determination is made of which of the two virtual target stimulating current vectors has a greater component projecting at predetermined angles from the target normal vector.
