Provided herein are copolymers that comprise copolymerized residues of a perfluorotrivinyltriazine monomer of Formula 1.  Preferred Rgroups include, without limitation, &#x2014;(CF)&#x2014; (n=1-6); &#x2014;(CF)&#x2014;[OCF(CF)CF]&#x2014; (m=1-4, p=1-4); and &#x2014;[(CF(CF)&#x2014;O)&#x2014;(CF)]&#x2014; (x=1-3, k=1-5). Preferred comonomers for copolymerization with the perfluorotrivinyltriazine monomer (1) include, without limitation, tetrafluoroethylene (TFE); vinylidene fluoride (VF2); hexafluoropropylene (HFP); vinyl fluoride (VF); EVE; PSEPVE; perfluoro-(long chain vinyl ethers); E; P; PFBE; PEVE; EVE-OH; EVE-P; PDD; and the cure-site monomers BTFB, ITFB, 8-CNVE, 8-SAVE, and the like. Also provided are methods of synthesizing the copolymers and articles comprising the copolymers.

Copolymers of perfluorotrivinyltriazine compounds and methods for synthesizing the copolymers

The present invention provides 1,3,3,3-tetrafluoropropene (HFO-1234ze) copolymers comprising 1,3,3,3-tetrafluoropropene and one or more comonomers selected from the group consisting of vinyl fluoride (VF), vinylidene fluoride (VF), tetrafluoroethylene (TFE), chlorotrifluoroethylene (CTFE), hexafluoropropylene (HFP), and perfluoro(alkyl vinyl ether) (PAVE), wherein said alkyl contains 1 to 5 carbon atoms, the copolymers being a fluoroplastic or a fluoroelastomer, depending upon monomer content.

Optionally, a second dispersing agent may be employed in the polymerization, said second agent being a perfluoropolyether having at least one endgroup selected from the group consisting of carboxylic acid, a salt thereof, sulfonic acid and a salt thereof, phosphoric acid and a salt thereof.

Fluoroalkyl ether sulfonate surfactants

An emulsion polymerization process for the production of fluoropolymers is disclosed wherein a combination of at least two fluorosurfactants is employed as dispersants. At least one fluorosurfactant is a perfluoroalkyl or perfluoroalkoxy sulfinate. At least one other fluorosurfactant is a perfluoropolyether having at least one endgroup selected from the group consisting of carboxylic acid, a slat thereof, sulfonic acid and a salt thereof.

Process for producing fluoropolymers

Compositions of fluoroelastomers containing copolymerized units of tetrafluoroethylene, propylene, a first cure site selected from the group consisting of i) trifluoroethylene, ii) 3,3,3-trifluoropropene-1, iii) 1,2,3,3,3-pentafluoropropylene, iv) 1,1,3,3,3-pentafluoropropylene, and v) 2,3,3,3-tetrafluoropropene, and a second cure site selected from the group consisting of i) copolymerized units of a brominated cure site monomer, ii) copolymerized units of an iodinated cure site monomer, iii) copolymerized units of a chlorinated cure site monomer, iv) brominated endgroups, v) iodinated endgroups and vi) a combination of any of i)-v) are readily curable with polyhydroxy curing systems. The resulting cured articles have a combination of excellent resistance to alkaline fluids, superior tensile properties and compression set resistance, and excellent adhesion to metal substrates. Optionally, the fluoroelastomers may be dual cured by both a polyhydroxy system and an organic peroxide system.

Curable base-resistant fluoroelastomers

A novel semi-batch emulsion polymerization process for the production of fluoroelastomers is disclosed wherein a hydrocarbon anionic surfactant is employed as the dispersing agent. The surfactant has the formula R-L-M wherein R is an alkyl group having between 6 and 17 carbon atoms, L is selected from the group consisting of ArSO, SO, SO, POand COOand M is a univalent cation. Preferred surfactants are sulfonates of the formula CH&#x2014;(CH)&#x2014;SOM, CH&#x2014;(CH)&#x2014;CH&#x2014;SOM, or CH&#x2014;(CH)&#x2014;CH&#x2550;CHCH&#x2014;SOM, where n is an integer from 6 to 17, or mixtures thereof, and M is a cation having a valence of 1. Surfactant is not introduced to the reactor until shortly after the polymerization reaction has begun.

Semi-batch process for producing fluoroelastomers

A base resistant, substantially amorphous fluoroelastomer comprising (1) 10-40 mole percent ethylene units, (2) 32-60 mole percent tetrafluoroethylene units, (3) 20-40 mole percent perfluoro ether units selected from the group consisting of perfluoro(alkyl vinyl ethers), perfluoro(alkyl alkenyl ethers) and perfluoro(alkoxy alkenyl ethers), and (4) 0.1 to 15 mole percent of a cure site monomer selected from the group consisting of i) 3,3,3-trifluoropropene-1, ii) trifluoroethylene, iii) 1,2,3,3,3-pentafluoropropylene, iv) 1,1,3,3,3-pentafluoropropylene, and v) 2,3,3,3-tetrafluoropropene. Such fluoroelastomers may be vulcanized with polyhydroxy curatives. The resulting vulcanized fluoroelastomer compositions are resistant to attack by amines, strong bases and hydrogen sulfide and possess a combination of good low temperature and high temperature properties and they are resistant to oil swell.

A novel emulsion polymerization process for the production of fluoroelastomers is disclosed wherein a partially fluorinated anionic surfactant of the formula F&mdash;(CF CF ) &mdash;CH CH SO M, where n is an integer from 2 to 9, or mixtures thereof, and M is a cation having a valence of 1, is used as the dispersing agent.
