The present invention relates to a method of controlling a wind turbine having at least one blade and a controller, including: detect location of foreign material adhered to the blade by sensors mounted on the blade and communicatively coupled to the controller; determine the resonance mode of the blade to be excited based on the location of the foreign material by the controller; and excite the blade to the resonance mode; wherein the resonance mode is one higher than the first order resonance mode. The present invention also relates to a wind turbine using the method.

Method of controlling a wind turbine, and a wind turbine

A system for scheduling maintenance of a component in a wind turbine. The system receives signals from each of the wind turbines in a population of wind turbines. From the signals, the system detects a failure of the component in one of the wind turbine. In response to the detect failure, the system calculates a new life value for the component. The life value is then compared to a threshold value. If the life value is within a specified parameter compared to the threshold value, the system schedules a change of the component in all of the wind turbines in the population.

In the case that an alarm level for at least one component exceeds a predefined level, the method comprises estimating an expected remaining lifetime for the component under the current operating conditions, and controlling operation of the wind turbine in order to adjust the expected remaining lifetime for the component to a desired expected remaining lifetime for said component. Thereby, the expected remaining lifetime for the component can be prolonged until the next scheduled service event. Downtime of the wind turbine is considerably reduced, and unscheduled service events are avoided to the greatest possible extent. Mean time between inspections (MTBI) is also extended.

A system for monitoring the quality of maintenance performed on a wind turbine. A restoration factor is used to determine the quality of maintenance performed of the wind turbine. A restoration factor determined after a scheduled maintenance is compared to historical and comparative references to determine the quality of the maintenance performed on the wind turbine. Based upon these comparisons, maintenance of the wind turbine may be modified to increase the capacity of the wind turbine.

A wind turbine that implements such a method is also disclosed.
