A description is given of a secondary lithium metal battery in which the formation of lithium dendrites is inhibited. The battery ( ) comprises negative electrode material ( ) on a current collector ( ) and positive electrode material ( ) on a current collector ( ) separated by a separator ( ), which may be a polymer gel electrolyte optionally combined with a separator. According to the invention, the negative electrode (anode) has a high specific surface area, so that lithium dendrites are prevented during charging of the negative electrode. Examples of electrode materials of high surface area are particles of graphite, metals such as nickel, or metal foams, e.g. of nickel. Lithium intercalation does not occur in metals, whereas the intercalating capacity for lithium in graphite is at most 25 percent of the capacity of the positive electrode.

Secondary lithium battery comprising lithium deposited on negative electrode material

A display device comprising a channel plate (,) having channels (,&Prime;) containing an ionizable gas (,), and walls of the channels (,&Prime;) being provided with electrodes (,) for selectively ionizing the ionizable gas (,) during operation. The display device further includes an electro-optical layer and means for activating said electro-optical layer. The display device is characterized in that the ionizable gas (,) comprises a gas of the group formed by hydrogen, deuterium and deuterium hydrogen, and in that the display device is provided with means for supplying hydrogen, deuterium or deuterium hydrogen to the ionizable gas. Suitable materials include VZ,, LZ,, PdZ,, LaNi,Z,, LaNi,Z,, LaCo,Z,, Zr&mdash;Mn&mdash;Z,or Pd&mdash;Ag&mdash;Z,, where L is a lanthanide and Z is hydrogen and/or deuterium. The means are preferably situated in a recess (,) around the channel plate (,), in the pump connection (,) and/or they form part of the electrodes (,).
