The use of filler for the manufacture of paper and board products the air permeability of which does not substantially change as a function of the amount of filler, the filler being at least in part made up of cellulose or lignocellulose fibrils on which there have been deposited light-scattering material particles the proportion of which is 67-85%, preferably approx. 70-82%, of the weight of the filler.

Method for manufacturing paper and board

The present invention concerns a method of producing a calendered, coated fibrous web, according to which method a fibrous web is coated with a coating colour containing a coating pigment, and the coated fibrous web is calendered. According to the invention, at least 1%, preferably 10 to 100% of the weight of the pigment comprises calcium oxalate, and calendering the coated web by online calendering. The properties of the calcium oxalate pigment are so advantageous for calendering that it is possible to obtain a reasonably high gloss already with a machine calender (online calendering), which will eliminate need for a separate offline calender in the production line of matt surface papers.

Method of producing a coated fibrous web

A filler comprising cellulose or lignocellulose fibrils on which light-scattering material particles have been deposited, and a process for the manufacture thereof. In the filler according to the invention, an alkyl derivative of cellulose, such as CMC, has been sorbed to the fibrils. Such a filler can be prepared from a source material containing cellulose or lignocellulose fibrils by first forming a fibril suspension, into which there are fed source materials forming an inorganic or organic salt that, when precipitating, forms a light-scattering pigment. The filler according to the invention has very good strength properties; in particular, good bond strength is achieved by means of it. The concentration of mineral pigment in paper can be increased and, furthermore, the grammage of paper can be lowered without the other important properties of the paper deteriorating.

Filler and a process for the production thereof

The present invention relates to the use of calcium oxalate as a filler or pigment. In particular described herein is a method of reducing the combustion residue of coated paper or cardboard products by replacing at least a part of the conventional pigments and filler needed for achieving predetermined optical properties with calcium oxalate.

The invention relates to a procedure for adding a filler into a pulp based on cellulose fibers, in which the pulp is fluidized and the filler is added into it. Preferably the pulp is stirred in the fluidized state while the filler is being added. The pulp is preferably at a medium consistency when the filler is being added. Filler for use in paper manufacture and method for producing it

The present invention concerns a process and a coating color for coating a cellulosic web. According to the process an aqueous coating color is applied on the surface of the web. The invention comprises using a coating color which contains an aqueous polymer whose viscosity in an aqueous solution increases when the temperature rises. Preferably, methylcellulose or a corresponding polymer having a gelling temperature of about 5 to 10 .degree. C. more than the application tempature of the coating color is used. The temperature of the coating is increased after the application of the coating color in order to achieve gelling of the polymer. As a result, the coating color rapidly solidifies which decreases the amount of mixture being recycled and it reduces mist-formation in the film press method and improves coverage of coating applied by conventional blade coating.

Process and coating color for coating of paper and board

The invention relates to a procedure for determining a quantity dependent on the rate of diffusion in the fibre wall for diffusion occurring through it, in which procedure a diffusible tracer is introduced into the fibres under measurement, the fibres are suspended in an aqueous phase and the tracer concentration is determined after a certain time has elapsed since the time of suspension of the fibres, and the quantity dependent on the rate of diffusion is calculated on the basis of the concentration and time. In addition, the invention relates to a procedure for determining the proportion of secondary fibre in a fibre suspension containing primary fibre and secondary fibre, in which procedure virtual diffusion coefficients are determined in the fibre wall for diffusion taking place through it in at least two fibre suspensions for which the proportions of primary and secondary fibre are known and in a fibre suspension under measurement, and that the proportion of secondary fibre in the suspension under measurement is estimated by assuming that the diffusion coefficient depends mainly linearly on the proportion of primary and secondary fibre in the fibre suspension.
