The present invention deals with coated pipes having a layer of multimodal polyethylene. The multimodal ethylene copolymer is a copolymer of ethylene with one or more alpha-olefin comonomers having from 4 to 10 carbon atoms and has a weight average molecular weight of from 70000 g/mol to 250000 g/mol, the ratio of the weight average molecular weight to the number average molecular weight, Mw/Mn, of from 15 to 50, a melt index MFRof from 0.05 g/10 min to 5 g/10 min, a melt index MFRof from 0.5 to 10 g/10 min and a density of from 930 kg/m to 955 kg/m. Further, the multimodal ethylene copolymer comprises the multimodal ethylene copolymer comprises from 49 to 59% based on the weight of the multimodal ethylene copolymer a low molecular weight ethylene homopolymer component, said low molecular weight ethylene homopolymer having a weight average molecular weight of from 5000 g/mol to 70000 g/mol; and from 51 to 41% based on the weight of the multimodal ethylene copolymer a high molecular weight ethylene copolymer component, said high molecular weight ethylene copolymer having a weight average molecular weight of from 100000 g/mol to 700000 g/mol. The pipes can be coated with high throughput and good production economy. The coatings have good mechanical properties.

A multimodal linear low density polyethylene polymer having a final density of 900 to 940 kg/m, and containing at least one &#x3b1;-olefin comonomer in addition to ethylene comprising: (A) 30 to 60 wt % of a lower molecular weight component being an ethylene homopolymer or a copolymer of ethylene and at least one &#x3b1;-olefin; and (B) 70 to 40 wt % of a higher molecular weight component being a copolymer of ethylene and at least one &#x3b1;-olefin, said &#x3b1;-olefin being the same or different from any &#x3b1;-olefin used in component (A) but with the proviso that both components (A) and (B) are not polymers of ethylene and butane alone; wherein the multimodal LLDPE has a dart drop of at least 700 g; and wherein components (A) and (B) are obtainable using a Ziegler-Natta catalyst.

The present inventions relates to a process for producing polyethylene compositions comprising polymerizing polyethylene resins in a cascaded multi-stage reaction in which the reaction steps are performed in at least two slurry phase reactors (A) and (B) and at least one gas phase reactor (C) which are arranged in series in any order wherein in reactor (A) a low molecular weight ethylene homo- or copolymer fraction having a MFRof 100 to 2000 g/10 min, in reactor (B) a low molecular weight ethylene homo- or copolymer fraction having an MFRof 100 to 2000 g/10 min, and in reactor (C) a high molecular weight ethylene copolymer fraction are polymerized, and further comprising a compounding step after polymerization, wherein the final polyethylene composition has a MFRof 3 to 50 g/10 min, the melt flow rates being determined according to ISO 1133.
