Architectures or techniques are presented that can improve operation of permanent magnet (PM) motors, which can be part of a compressor or other heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) device. Such improvements can be achieved by integration of inductive filtering into the motor assembly. A higher overall inductance can reduce current ripple and can further result in a lower total harmonic distortion, reduced power loss, and reduced heat generated. For example a first architecture can include a ferromagnetic core element in the PM motor that can cause a non-torque-producing reluctance path to the shaft. A second architecture can integrate a signal filter, which is customarily external, into a housing of the PM motor. Such can significant reduce costs and provide other advantages. A third architecture can couple an inductor (e.g., of the signal filter) to the shaft. Rotation of the shaft can thus serve to provide additional cooling for the inductor.

A position sensor includes a plurality of E-shaped ferromagnetic cores arranged to define a circular opening therethrough to receive a shaft. Each E-shaped ferromagnetic core has a plurality of teeth, wherein adjacent E-shaped ferromagnetic cores of the arranged plurality of E-shaped ferromagnetic cores have an overlapping tooth. The position sensor further includes a frame surrounding the arranged plurality of E-shaped ferromagnetic cores, with the E-shaped ferromagnetic cores coupled to the frame.

Permanent magnet rotors for electric motors, particularly electric motors for use in compressors, improve the electromagnetic efficiency of the motor. The rotors can include retention of surface permanent magnets using one or more of retaining features on the motor and/or pole spacers interfacing with corresponding features on a rotor core, the use of a monolithic magnet in the rotor, and/or use of a carbon fiber sleeve. The rotor can include an eddy current shield, disposed on the rotor core, on a surface of the rotor, or located within a sleeve surrounding the rotor. The rotor can be sized such that an air-gap between the rotor and a stator of a motor using the rotor is a predetermined amount that reduces electromagnetic losses such as eddy current losses.

Rotor for electric motors

A method for adjusting compression efficiency for an HVACR system having a variable-frequency drive (VFD) is disclosed. The method includes determining a first compression efficiency, determining an operating point, determining a region of an operating map when a difference between the operating point and a previously determined operating point exceeds a predetermined threshold, adjusting a VFD input to a first input based on the region of the operating map, and controlling the VFD using the first input for a predetermined period of time. The method also includes determining a second compression efficiency and an operation restriction, adjusting the VFD input to a second input based on the operation restriction and a difference between the first compression efficiency and the second compression efficiency, and controlling the VFD using the second input. The method also includes utilizing machine learning control techniques to control several system variables to optimize the compression efficiency.

An active magnetic bearing apparatus for supporting a rotor of a rotary machine comprises an axial magnetic bearing unit and a radial magnetic bearing unit mounted directly to one another. An electric machine can include a stator, a rotor frame and a pole arrangement with: plural segment pieces disposed circumferentially around, and fastened to, the rotor frame; permanent magnet pieces positioned on inclined side edges of each segment piece; and plural pole pieces disposed circumferentially around the rotor frame and disposed alternatingly with the segment pieces. The magnet pieces are pressed between inclined side edges of the pole pieces and the inclined side edges of the segment pieces. The segment pieces, the permanent magnet pieces and the pole pieces form a closed ring around the outer surface of the rotor frame, with plural such rings being arranged after each other in an axial direction. An axial air channel can pass through the rings, and at least one radial air duct (RR) between the rings.

Electric machine with pole arrangement

In an arrangement for cooling an electrical machine, the electrical machine includes a rotor and a stator located at the end of an air gap from the rotor. The rotor includes at least one axial cooling channel originating from the first end of the rotor that is connected to at least two axially successive cooling channels that are substantially radial within the rotor. The stator is made of sheets using axially successive core modules. The stator includes a radial cooling channel between two core modules. Gaseous cooling agent is led to the cooling channels of the rotor and stator from the end of the rotor. The outer surface of the stator core module includes a cooling jacket by the length (L) of the stator core module at maximum, and liquid cooling agent is led to the cooling jacket.

Arrangement and method for cooling an electrical machine

In an arrangement in accordance with the invention for attaching a permanent magnet to an electrical machine's rotor, the rotor comprises at least two magnetic poles, and there is a pole gap between two magnetic poles. Permanent magnets are installable on the surface of the magnetic core. A pole piece is installable on the permanent magnet side facing the air gap. There is fixing means on the sides of the pole piece facing the pole gap for attaching the pole piece to the rotor using the locking parts, and the fixing means are connected to the pole piece through an articulated joint.

Arrangement for attaching a magnet to a rotor, and a rotor

An arrangement for attaching a permanent magnet to the rotor of an electrical machine and such a rotor are provided. The rotor is assembled of sheets and includes at least two magnetic poles and a magnetic core. Permanent magnets are installable on a surface of the magnetic core, and a pole piece assembled of sheets is installable on a side of the permanent magnet that faces an air gap. At least one channel passing through the pole piece is built in the pole piece and magnetic core. A tightening strip is installable in the channel. The tightening strip is attachable to the pole piece using locking parts, and an end of the tightening strip facing the magnetic core includes fixing parts for attaching the tightening strip to the magnetic core.

The present disclosure relates to a measuring bearing currents in an electrical machine. According to exemplary embodiments, radio frequency signals that are generated by electric discharges are detected by an antenna near the bearing. A synchronizing signal is combined with the origin of the bearing current and signal triggered by the synchronizing signal is measured.

Method and apparatus for measuring bearing currents in an electrical machine

A permanent magnet module to be installed in a rotor includes at least two permanent magnets with the first magnetic pole on the first plane surface and the second magnetic pole on the second plane surface, and a cover at least partially enveloping the permanent magnets. The cover of the module is magnetically conductive and includes a top surface, substantially covering the first plane surface of the permanent magnet, and a bottom surface, substantially covering the second plane surface of the permanent magnet. The cover is at least partially open at the side surfaces of the permanent magnet. Also disclosed is a rotor for an electrical machine, the rotor having permanent magnets fitted into a corresponding module.
