Systems and methods for securing communications in a playback device using a key base and at least one key contribution in accordance with embodiments of the invention are disclosed. In one embodiment, a process includes generating a key base using a decryption key and at least one key contribution, where the decryption key can be recovered using the key base and the at least one key contribution, receiving the key base, receiving the at least one key contribution, sending the key base to a decryption module, sending the key contribution to a control module, performing a control feature on the piece of content using the control module, providing the key contribution to the decryption module when the control feature is performed, generating the decryption key using the key base and the at least one key contribution, and accessing at least a portion of the piece of content.

Securing communication in a playback device with a control module using a key contribution

Systems and methods are disclosed that authenticate devices or users, and enable playback of secured streaming content through a media player. In one embodiment, the invention is a system for receiving secure content over an unmanaged network, including a security application configured operate on a user device with access to a network, where the security application is configured to receive a request for playlist data from the media player, send a playlist request to a content server, receive playlist data from the content server, send playlist data to a media player, receive a security access request from the media player, send a security access request to a security server, receive security access data from the security server; and send security access data to a media player.

Managing access to digital content within a particular domain, including: receiving the digital content at a first client device; decrypting the received digital content at the first client device using a first key; transcoding the digital content to another format; re-encrypting the transcoded content using a second key, wherein the second key is obtained by one of: (1) directly from a server; or (2) indirectly by deriving it locally based on information received from the server; and transmitting the re-encrypted content to a second client device, wherein the second client device obtains the second key and decrypts the re-encrypted content at the second client device.

Security and key management of digital content

A targeted discovery between a first device and a second device in a network, in particular, a WHDI network, provides discovery for an identified device or a group of identified devices. The targeted discovery determines an identifier for a second device or a group of devices that the second device belongs to, and sends a device discovery message to the second device using the identifier for the second device when the second device is configured to respond to the device discovery message if the device discovery message includes the identifier for the second device. The first device receives a response to the device discovery message from the second device and can start further communication with the second device.

Method of targeted discovery of devices in a network

Systems and methods for secure content distribution to playback devices connected to a local network via a residential gateway using secure links are disclosed. One embodiment of the invention includes a content server, a rights management server, a residential gateway configured to communicate with the content server and the rights management server via a network, and a playback device configured to communicate with the residential gateway via a local network. In addition, the residential gateway is configured to receive protected content from the content server, the playback device is configured to request access to the protected content from the residential gateway, the residential gateway is configured to request access to the protected content from the rights management server and the request includes information uniquely identifying the playback device, the rights management server is configured to provide access information to the residential gateway when the information uniquely identifying the playback device satisfies at least one predetermined criterion with respect to playback devices associated with the residential gateway, the residential gateway and the playback device are configured to create a secure link between the residential gateway and the playback device via the local network, and the residential gateway is configured to decrypt the protected content using the access information provided by the rights management server and to encrypt the decrypted content for distribution to the playback device via the secure link.

Digital rights domain management for secure content distribution in a local network

A source device determines content rights for encrypted content in the first encoding standard using a first rights data file. The source device creates a second rights data file for transcoded content in the second encoding standard. The source device performs a key management operation including communicating a decryption key for the encrypted content in the first encoding standard to a transcoder. The source device transfers the encrypted content in the first encoding standard to the transcoder. The transcoder decrypts the encrypted content, transcodes the content from the first encoding standard to the content in the second encoding standard, and re-encrypts the content in the second encoding standard using a second encryption key. The transcoder then transfers the encrypted content in the second encoding standard to an indicated device.

Secure transcoding of content

The present invention discloses an apparatus and method for a method for determining proximity of a device (e.g., a client device). In one example, a key management request is acquired from the device. A measurement request is then transmitted to the device. Afterwards, a measurement reply is received from the device. In response, a determination is made as to whether a measurement parameter associated with the transmitting and the receiving exceeds a predetermined threshold. If the predetermined threshold is not exceeded (i.e., the device is proximate to an associated local network), then a reply to the original key management request is transmitted to the device. Notably, the reply to the key management request is required for the device to establish a secure session with a server from which digital content can be acquired.

Method and apparatus for determining the proximity of a client device

A process may be utilized by the DVR. The process receives a plurality of segments of a set of content and a plurality of corresponding content rule sets. Further, the process provides one or more instructions to record and encrypt the plurality of segments of the set of content on a storage medium. In addition, the process provides the plurality of content rule sets to the DRM component to be inserted into a locally generated and secured content license associated with the encryption of the set of content. The secured content license includes a master key and a list of the plurality of corresponding content rule sets that have been received in order of reception. The process receives a plurality of marker tokens from the DRM component in order to facilitate trick mode playback.

Method and apparatus for assisting with content key changes

A method of providing permissions to consume content objects within a domain includes creating a domain and a domain membership rights object for each member. The domain facilitates the sharing of content objects amongst the members of the domain. The domain membership rights objects for each member include permissions for each member in the domain to consume content objects in the domain.

A domain controller is provided for use with a content source and a media device. The content source can provide encrypted content and rights data corresponding to the encrypted content. The media device can provide a request for the encrypted content and the rights data. The domain controller includes a communication portion, a digital rights management portion and a memory portion. The communication portion can engage in a first bi-directional communication with the content source and can engage in a second bi-directional communication with the media device. The digital rights management portion can receive the rights data. The memory portion can store the encrypted content. The second bi-directional communication includes an authorization and authentication communication between the communication portion and the media device, a secure move message exchange between the communication portion and the media device and a content download from the communication portion to the media device.

System and method for securely moving content

A Service Key Delivery (SKD) system for delivering a service keys to client devices in a communications network. The delivered service keys are operable to be used to decrypt an encrypted key operable to be used to decrypt an encrypted digital content. The SKD system includes a data input interface for receiving a distribution time frame for the keys and a listing of client device identifications. The SKD system also includes a scheduling module to partition at least part of the distribution time frame into a number of time slots in which the number may be based on a variety of factors. The scheduling module assigns the time slots in the partitioned part of the distribution time frame to the client devices based on the identifications in the listing. The SKD system also includes a message generator configured to send key delivery messages to the client devices.

Service key delivery system

The systems disclosed here provide a complete standards-based end-to-end scalable system for storage, delivery and in-home distribution of digital content over IP networks using standard protocols such as Real-time Transport Protocol ('RTP') or IP-encapsulated MPEG-2 Transport Stream, or traditional MPEG-2 networks. Mechanisms are provided for receiving content from one security domain, re-encrypting that content uniquely for a receiving device, persistently storing that content, and playing back that content at a later time to and within another security domain. The systems also provide the ability to stream the persistently-stored content from the initial receiving device to another device that has been authenticated as part of a, e.g., home network. This allows a media server, e.g., a dual-tuner set-top box ('STB') with hard drive, to deliver recorded content to any TV in the house by streaming to media clients such as STBs.
