Disclosed is a heat exchanger having heat exchange plates and a base plate that can help to mitigate the thermal stresses encountered by a heat exchanger, particularly, around the peripheral edge portions of the heat exchanger and the base of heat exchanger. This is achieved by providing a channel of coolant fluid near the peripheral edge portions which is in between the peripheral edge portions and the manifold permitting flow of hot fluid. In addition, the base plate of the heat exchanger is protected from the hot fluid flowing through the manifold by providing deflectors that shield the base plate from the hot fluid.

A battery cell cooler containing a pair of complementary plates. The pair of complementary plates together forms a tubular flow passage and one or more tubular sections. The flow passage has an inlet end, an outlet end and dimples or ribs along the length of the flow passage. The one or more tubular sections have an inlet duct and an outlet duct, the inlet duct being coupled to an expanded receptacle at the inlet end and in fluid communication with the inlet end of the flow passage and the outlet duct being coupled to an expanded receptacle, at the outlet end and in fluid communication with the outlet end of the flow passage. Also, disclosed is a device containing a battery cell sandwiched between a pair of battery cell coolers, as described herein. Further disclosed is a method for forming the battery cell cooler, as described herein.

Disclosed is a method of forming a heat exchanger turbulizer apparatus including a member having a longitudinal axis, a lateral width and a plurality of strips including first strips and second strips, each strip extending widthwise and being corrugated longitudinally so as to form a plurality of laterally spaced-apart sections connected to one another by bridges projecting from the sections in a common direction, the bridges of the first and second strips extending in the same direction and the corrugations of the second strips being offset laterally from the corrugations of the first strips. The method comprises: crimping longitudinally-corrugated strip material between first and second forming dies to form said apparatus, said dies being adapted such that substantially all lateral movement of strip material in crimping results from strip material being drawn laterally by material that has been displaced in a direction parallel to the direction of die movement.

Turbulizers and method for forming same

A heat exchanger comprises at least one tube or plate pair defining a fluid flow passage which is reduced in height across a portion of its width. A turbulizer comprising a plurality of rows of convolutions is received inside the fluid flow passage in either the low pressure drop or high pressure drop orientation. The turbulizer includes convolutions of reduced height in order to at least partially fill the reduced-height portions of the fluid flow passage and thereby reduce bypass flow. In some preferred embodiments of the invention, heat exchanger tubes or plate pairs define fluid flow passages which are reduced in height along their edges, and the turbulizer is similarly reduced in height along its edges.

Heat exchangers with turbulizers having convolutions of varied height

A method for forming heat exchanger plates () comprises formation of a fluid flow channel () along the edges () of a sheet metal strip or blank, and formation of a pair of raised end bosses. The raised end bosses () are elongated in the longitudinal dimension and are formed within the final width dimension of the plate so as to avoid the need for trimming of excess material along the edges of the plate. The method generates less scrap than prior art processes using progressive stamping, and also permits variation of the plate lengths.

Heat exchanger plates and methods for manufacturing heat exchanger plates

A method for forming heat exchanger plates comprises formation of a fluid flow channel along the edges of a sheet metal strip or blank, and formation of a pair of raised end bosses. The raised end bosses are elongated in the longitudinal dimension and are formed within the final width dimension of the plate so as to avoid the need for trimming of excess material along the edges of the plate. The method generates less scrap than prior art processes using progressive stamping, and also permits variation of the plate lengths.

Heat exchanger plates and manufacturing method

A heat exchanger is disclosed of the type having stacked plate pairs or tubes defining flow passages, with turbulizer located inside such flow passages. The turbulizers are of the expanded metal type having rows of convolutions. The convolutions are interrupted periodically to form non-convoluted pressure recovery zones located between or downstream of the convolutions. Also, the rows of convolutions can be grouped and spaced apart to provide longitudinal neutral zones between groups of adjacent rows of convolutions. The pressure recovery zones and longitudinal neutral channels reduce pressure drop in the heat exchanger without appreciably reducing heat transfer.

Heat exchanger turbulizers with interrupted convolutions

A mounting or end bracket is disclosed for producing plate and fin heat exchangers of the type having a plurality of stacked, hollow plate pairs or tubes including mating end bosses having communicating openings formed therein to form a manifold for the flow of fluid through the plate pairs or tubes. Fins are located between and at the top end bottom of the stacked plate pairs or tubes extending between the end bosses. End fittings are used for the inlet and outlet of fluid to the plate pairs or tubes. The mounting brackets allow the end fittings to be positioned where desired to define different flow circuits through the plate pairs, and also allow different size end fittings to be used, without having to use special spacers, different size fins or specially shaped plates to accommodate the different end fittings. The mounting brackets have a planar central portion and opposed offset end portions located in a plane parallel to and spaced from the central portion. The central portion has spacing projections extending transversely in a direction opposite to that of the opposite end portions. Different fitting sizes are accommodated simply by changing the height of the spacing projections.
