Solid-state batteries offer improved safety and the high-energy-density capabilities required for next generation demands of electric vehicles. Disclosed is a method for fabricating high-current-density solid-state batteries, and the associated device structures and systems. The method of fabrication includes purifying surfaces of a solid electrolyte, depositing materials to form deposition layers on the surfaces of the solid electrolyte in a vacuum, and forming oxygen-deficient interfaces at the interface of the deposition layers and the solid electrolyte. The methods and associated devices form high-current-density solid-state batteries with stable electrochemical performance over hundreds of electric cycles.

Interface design for high current density cycling of solid state battery

A cathode for a multilayer solid-state electrochemical cell is described herein. The cathode comprises nanofibers of a cathode active material; particles of the cathode active material; and nanofibers of a cubic phase lithium lanthanum zirconium oxide (c-LLZO); all of which are dispersed in a polymeric matrix. Electrochemical cells comprising a solid-state electrolyte and the cathodes comprising the nanofibers of c-LLZO are also described herein.

Nanofiber polymer composite cathodes

A solid-state electrolyte for a multilayer solid-state electrochemical cell is described herein. The electrolyte comprises a lithium electrolyte salt and nanofibers of a cubic phase lithium lanthanum zirconium oxide (c-LLZO), and a polymer interspersed with the nanofibers and electrolyte salt. Electrochemical cells comprising the solid-state electrolyte, and solid-state cathodes comprising the nanofibers of c-LLZO are also described herein.

Solid-state nanofiber polymer multilayer composite electrolytes and cells

Systems and methods of reversibly controlling the oxygen vacancy concentration and distribution in oxide heterostructures consisting of electronically conducting InOfilms grown on ionically conducting YO-stabilized ZrOsubstrates. Oxygen ion redistribution across the heterointerface is induced using an applied electric field oriented in the plane of the interface, resulting in controlled oxygen vacancy (and hence electron) doping of the film and possible orders-of-magnitude enhancement of the film's electrical conduction. The reversible modified behavior is dependent on interface properties and is attained without cation doping or changes in the gas environment in contact with the sample.
