An optical system and method provides at least one, and preferably an array of relatively small, high brightness light sources with a surrounding surface that exhibits brightness, thereby reducing the contrast between the high brightness produced by the light sources and the brightness of their surrounding surfaces. The optical system includes a light waveguide structure that captures a portion of the light from the individual high-brightness light sources, and then re-emits the source light to create brightness in the light sources' surrounding surfaces. The optical system is particularly adapted for use with LEDs, but could be used with LEDs, but could be used with other high brightness light sources.

Optical system and method for managing brightness contrasts between high brightness light sources and surrounding surfaces

A luminaire is provided for illuminating a task surface and a volume of space above and about the task surface, including a limited human occupiable space proximate the task surface. The luminaire includes a body having a base end and an extension portion extending from the base end. A task lighting element on the body, and suitably at the base of the body, directs light in a directional light distribution pattern toward a task surface. Area light sources on the extension portion of the body emit light in a diffuse light distribution pattern for illuminating the volume of space over the task surface and a limited human occupiable space proximate the task surface.

Luminaire for creating effective proximity lighting in a low ambient lighting environment

A luminaire is provided for illuminating a task surface and a volume of space above and about the task surface, including a limited human occupiable space proximate the task surface. The luminaire includes a generally vertical riser portion and a generally horizontal extension arm portion. A task lighting element on the extension arm portion directs light in a directional light distribution pattern toward a task surface. A source of light associated with the riser portion of the luminaire produces light in a generally diffuse light distribution pattern which, when the luminaire is supported in its operative position relative to the task surface, illuminates the volume over and about the task surface.

A configurable planar lighting system includes a system track and at least one, and preferably more than one, very thin profile planar light module attachable at selectable positions along the system track. The thin profile planar light module holds a very thin area light source, which is electrified when the planar fixture module is attached to the system track. The configurable planar lighting system can be mounted and configured on a wall without surrounding structures or to the underside of a counter, cabinet, shelf or the like. The configurable planar lighting system can also act as a shelf for light objects such as decorative objects, and can be used for task lighting or display lighting or both in versatile configurations. In under-structure applications, the lighting system can be mounted to provide configurable lighting without the physical parts of the system being visible at normal viewing angles.

A gestural control dimmer switch for controlling the illumination level of a light using hand movements includes a dimmer panel having a continuum of positions associated with a spectrum of illumination levels of the light. Hand position sensors produce a hand position detection field in front of the continuum of positions of the dimmer panel through which a hand can be passed. No dimming input is produced by a hand passing through the hand position detection field until the hand passing through the detection field reaches a set trigger position at one of the continuum of positions along the dimmer panel. A dimming input is only produced in response to changes in hand position in the hand position detection field after the hand reaches the trigger position. A new trigger position is set after the illumination level of the light controlled by the dimmer switch is adjusted.
