An N-substituted polyamideimide essentially composed of identical or different repeating units of the formula I ##STR1## where R.sup.1 is one of the following tetravalent aromatic radicals ##STR2## and X is a bond or one of the following linkers ##STR3## where R.sup.2 and R.sup.4 are each, independently of one another, one of the following divalent aromatic radicals ##STR4## and where X has the abovementioned meanings and where R.sup.3 is hydrogen or a monovalent radical such as C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 -alkyl or phenyl, and the C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 -alkyl-, C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 -alkoxy-, aryl- or halogen-substituted derivatives thereof, and precursors (monomers) therefor, are described.

N-substituted polyamide-imides

The di(hydroxyphenyl)-1,2,4-triazole monomers were first synthesized by reacting bis(4-hydroxyphenyl) hydrazide with aniline hydrochloride at 250.degree. C. in the melt and also by reacting 1,3 or 1,4-bis-(4-hydroxyphenyl)phenylene-dihydrazide with 2 moles of aniline hydrochloride in the melt. Purification of the di(hydroxyphenyl)-1,2,4-triazole monomers was accomplished by recrystallization. Poly(1,2,4-triazoles) (PT) were prepared by the aromatic nucleophilic displacement reaction of di(hydroxyphenyl)-1,2,4-triazole monomers with activated aromatic dihalides or activated aromatic dinitro compounds. The reactions were carried out in polar aprotic solvents such as sulfolane or diphenylsulfone using alkali metal bases such as potassium carbonate at elevated temperatures under nitrogen. This synthetic route has provided high molecular weight PT of new chemical structure, is economically and synthetically more favorable than other routes, and allows for facile chemical structure variation due to the availability of a large variety of activated aromatic dihalides.

Di(hydroxyphenyl)-1,2-4-triazole monomers

N-substituted polyamide-imide

Soluble and/or meltable benzothiazole-containing polyaryl ethers with a glass transition temperature of above 150.degree. C. and a melting point of up to 450.degree. C. are composed essentially of repeat units of the formula I ##STR1## whose rings may be substituted by C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 -alkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 -alkoxy, aryl or halogen and where R is ##STR2##

High temperature resistant, benzothiazole-containing polyaryl ethers

Poly(1,2,4-triazoles)(PT) have been prepared by involving the aromatic nucleophilic displacement reaction of di(hydroxyphenyl)-1,2,4-triazole monomers with activated aromatic dihalides or activated aromatic dinitro compounds. The reactions are carried out in polar aprotic solvents such as sulfolane or diphenylsulfone using alkali metal bases such as potassium carbonate at elevated temperatures under nitrogen. The di(hydroxyphenyl)-1,2,4-triazole monomers are first synthesized by reacting bis(4-hydroxyphenyl) hydrazide with aniline hydrochloride at 250.degree. C. in the melt and also by reacting 1,3 or 1,4-bis-(4-hydroxyphenyl)phenylenedihydrazide with 2 moles of aniline hydrochloride in the melt. Purification of the di(hydroxyphenyl)-1,2,4-triazole monomers is accomplished by recrystallization. This synthetic route has provided high molecular weight PT of new chemical structure, is economically and synthetically more favorable than other routes, and allows for facile chemical structure variation due to the availability of a large variety of activated aromatic dihalides.

Poly(1,2,4-triazole) via aromatic nucleophilic displacement

Poly(1,3,4-oxadiazoles) (POX) are prepared by the aromatic nucleophilic displacement reaction of di(hydroxyphenyl)-1,3,4-oxadiazole monomers with activated aromatic dihalides or activated aromatic dinitro compounds. The polymerizations are carried out in polar aprotic solvents such as sulfolane or diphenylsulfone using alkali metal bases such as potassium carbonate at elevated temperatures under nitrogen. The di(hydroxyphenyl)-1,3,4-oxadiazole monomers are synthesized by reacting 4-hydroxybenzoic hydrazide with phenyl-4-hydrobenzoate in the melt and also by reacting aromatic dihydrazides with two moles of phenyl-4-hydroxybenzoate in the melt. This synthetic route has provided high molecular weight POX of new chemical structure, is economically and synthetically more favorable than other routes, and allows for facile chemical structure variation due to the large variety of activated aromatic dihalides which are available.
