A barrier layer assembly is useful as a barrier component in articles subjected to repeated deformations. The barrier layer assembly has a support layer and a film layer. The barrier layer assembly has a bi-directionally corrugated surface. The surface may be an external or internal surface and is defined by non-sulcate furrows.

Expansible barrier film assemblies

Methods and systems for making a film made of dynamically vulcanized thermoplastic elastomeric material are provided herein. The subject methods and systems achieve dimensional stability of an elastic film by applying thermal treatment as part of the film making process and enhance the shrinkage of the film by intentionally with stretching the film while hot and freezing the film in the stretch. The systems and methods are useful in controlling shrinkage of DVA post film extrusion.

Methods of making a film of dynamically vulcanized thermoplastic elastomeric materials

A dynamically vulcanized alloy containing an elastomer and a thermoplastic resin is prepared by a process wherein supercritical fluid is injected into the thermoplastic elastomeric material as the material is mixed in an extruder. The material is mixed under conditions such that the thermoplastic elastomeric material is dynamically vulcanized wherein the elastomer forms a discontinuous dispersed of small particles in a continuous phase of the thermoplastic resin. The DVA material may then be directly formed into film or sheets by the use of at least one set of rolls located adjacent to the extruder outlet.

Dynamically vulcanized thermoplastic elastomer film

Disclosed herein is a process to produce a laminate comprises coating at least an outer surface of a dynamically vulcanized alloy film with an adhesive composition to produce the laminate, wherein the adhesive layer has a thickness of less than or equal to about 5 microns, wherein the dynamically vulcanized alloy film comprises a thermoplastic elastomer composition containing a thermoplastic resin as a continuous phase, and a rubber composition dispersed therein, as a dispersed phase. A laminate and a pneumatic tire comprising the laminate are also disclosed.

This invention relates to the preparation of thermoplastic vulcanizates (TPVs) with unique morphological features, more specifically, this invention relates to a method for preparing TPV compositions wherein the mixing of plastomers and elastomers are carried out in solvent with curatives to induce cross-linking.

Solution blending process for preparing thermoplastic vulcanizates

The present invention relates to a process for preparing a thermoplastic vulcanizate (TPV) comprising: contacting a thermoplastic polymer, a cross-linkable elastomer, at least one curative, and at least one cure activator in a solvent to form Composition A. The solvent is then removed, and thereafter the cross-linkable elastomer is at least partially cured. The average particle size of the cross-linkable elastomer is 10 microns or less after the solvent is removed.

Process for preparing articles

A process for the for the preparation of dynamically vulcanized thermoplastic elastomers is described. The process comprises melt processing under high shear conditions A) at least one thermoplastic engineering resin, B) at least one vulcanizable rubber, C) a curing agent or curing agents, and D) at least one additional thermoplastic engineering resin in the form of solid particles having an effective diameter of not less than 0.05 mm, wherein said solid particles D) are added to a molten mass of A), B) before, during or after the addition of C) but prior to substantial completion of the vulcanization of B). The process provides a means to avoid substantial degradation or unwanted cross-linking of the thermoplastic engineering resin and provides a means of controlling the reaction temperature during the curing, vulcanization, or cross-linking of the rubber.
