A system and method with a torque response linearly proportional to angular displacement between inner and outer rotors having magnets, forming magnetic poles, to provide a linear magnetic torsional spring with a wide operating region. Multiple rotor sections of magnetic poles in at least one of the inner and outer rotors are provided wherein at least one rotor section of magnets is circumferentially offset by an offset angle from at least one other rotor section of magnets. The magnetic torsional spring can produce linear torque T, where T=+/−k θ, k is the angular spring constant, and θ is the angular displacement. The torque responses from each rotor section can cause a combined torque response to function as the linear magnetic torsional spring. The extended linear portion can provide a useful radial angle of rotation for a linear torque to counteract a spring force applied to the rotor.

The present disclosure provides an electrical motor configured to operate with conductive fluids internal to the motor without short-circuiting. One embodiment is a telemetry modulator that can include the electric motor and a valve coupled with the electric motor. The valve has a valve stator and a valve rotor, and the electric motor can be used to control accurately the valve opening and closing with valve rotor rotation. The valve rotor can rotate continuously or in oscillations to generate a continuous pressure wave, such as for MWD/LWD communication. The electric motor is configured to allow drilling mud to flow into the electric motor without short-circuiting by the motor stator and/or motor rotor having an electric motor winding and a termination for the winding, the winding and termination having a nonconductive coating. The electric motor can be used in other applications inside and outside the oil field environment.

A downhole borehole imaging tool and methods for determining a borehole size includes a magnetoresistive system and a hub moveably coupled to a fixed tool string. The hub includes a magnet. The magnetoresistive system includes magnetoresistive sensors disposed within the fixed tool string and segregated from the magnet. During operation, a routine scan of all sensors measures, for example, the output voltage V, angle &#x3b8; of magnetic field, and temperature. Measurements from each sensor may then be characterized to account for temperature and input voltages variation of the sensors. The most accurate measurement can be used to derive the position of the hubusing the previous baseline parameters stored in the tool.

The present disclosure provides a bearing design that accommodates misalignment of a rotatable shaft in the bearing and is well suited to usage in a particulate-laden fluid. The bearing can be shaped with a curved surface along a longitudinal axis of the bearing, such as in a curved barrel shape or a ball shape, to provide a point contact instead of a line contact as is the case with conventional plain bearings. The point contact allows the bearing to adjust with a misalignment between ends of the shaft or between the external supports and facilitates the assembly and disassembly of the rotating shaft. Because the bearing compensates for misalignment, the bearing surfaces can have closer tolerances for a smaller gap between the bearing surfaces, which can result in improved performance.

A method for determining a depth related parameter of an instrument in a wellbore includes measuring movement of the instrument along the wellbore using a wheel sensor urged into contact with a wall of the wellbore. Movement of an instrument conveyance is measured proximate the surface. Measurements from the wheel sensor are calibrated using measurements of movement of the instrument conveyance. The depth related parameter of the instrument is determined using the calibrated wheel sensor measurements.
