Apparatus for treating the surface of bulbous or tuberous crops, comprising a substantially tubular treatment channel inclining upwards in the main direction of transport and comprising a top wall and a bottom wall, the bottom wall being made up of a number of drivable parallel rollers provided with treatment elements, and the top wall consisting of the lower part of a drivable endless conveyor. For the purpose of modifying the channel height, the top wall and the bottom wall are movable relative to each other longitudinally as well as perpendicularly. The lowermost rollers can form a receptacle reaching as far as before the foremost point of the conveyor belt.

The step of contacting comprises providing a plurality of freely pivotable flaps, brushes, grinding rolls, a brush plate or the like above the brushes with the lower ends thereof spaced apart from the tops of the brushes.

A steam peeling or cooking apparatus for produce, such as potatoes, carrots, celeriac, red beets, Swedish turnips, apples, and the like, comprising a substantially cylindrical peeling vessel basically stationary in operation, said vessel including supply and discharge conduits for medium, in particular steam, and having closable supply and discharge openings. Said vessel is divided into two compartments by a grid-like screen arranged substantially at right angles to the axis of the peeling vessel. The compartment not being in direct contact with the produce supply opening forms a condensate chamber and includes a closable discharge opening, said apparatus further including means for agitating the produce during operation. According to the invention the grid-like screen is fixedly secured to the vessel and has a passage which, in operation, is closed by a grid-like valve movable perpendicularly to the plane of the grid and the condensate chamber is fitted with a closable discharge opening for produce and/or condensate.

Steam peeling apparatus

A steam peeling or boiling apparatus for crops, such as potatoes, carrots, celery, apples and the like, or for meat, comprising a substantially cylindrical peeling vessel arranged for rotation around horizontal stub shafts, having a supply and discharge opening disposed eccentrically or non-eccentrically in one of the end faces. The opening is closable by an inwardly movable cover operated by a lever rotatably connected thereto, the other end of which is rotatably connected to the exterior of the vessel. The cover is provided with a second operating lever by means of which the cover can be displaced along the inner wall of the vessel in entirely 'controlled' fashion. The second operating lever is rotatably connected to the exterior of the vessel at a location situated in the perpendicular median plane between the initial and final positions of the cover pivot of the second operating lever.

Cover construction for a steam peeling apparatus

A method for steam peeling a plant product selected from the group consisting of potatoes, carrots, celery, red beets, Swedish turnips and apples in a substantially cylindrical peeling vessel having a product opening at one end and a liquid discharge outlet at the other end. In the peeling vessel there is disposed a partition or grid at the liquid discharge outlet end perpendicular to the longitudinal axis thereof and spaced from the liquid discharge outlet. The partition prevents passage of product to be peeled while allowing condensate to pass therethrough such that the product does not lie in the condensate during the application of steam. The steam is applied through an access opening in the vessel which is above the product level when the vessel is tilted around a horizontal axis into a normally operating longitudinally inclined position. In order to effect the peeling operation during the application of steam, stirring is carried out by at least one stirring arm disposed above the partitioning and axially along the wall of the vessel. The stirring arm rotates about the longitudinal axis of the vessel, when the vessel is in the normally operating position, to effect the peeling of the plant product. The vessel later tilts around a horizontal axis from the normally operating position until the other end is above the one end for discharging the peeled product through the product opening.
