A method of implanting and securing an implantable flow connector in a body of a patient for providing communication of a first space within the body of the patient with a second space within the body of the patient. The method includes providing a flow connector having a lumen having a first orifice and a second orifice, inserting a retention device into the first space within the body, subsequently inserting the flow connector through an opening in the retention device so the second portion of the flow connector extends into the first space within the body and placing the second space within the body over the retention device.

A system for stapling tissue comprises a flexible endoscope and an operative head including a pair of opposed, curved tissue clamping jaws sized to pass through an esophagus, the jaws being moveable with respect to one another between an open tissue receiving configuration and a closed tissue clamping configuration, a first one of the curved jaws including a stapling mechanism and a second one of the jaws including a staple forming anvil surface, the stapling mechanism including staple slots through which staples are fired arranged in a row extending from a proximal end of the first jaw to a distal end thereof in combination with a control handle which, when the operative head is in an operative position within one of a patient's stomach and esophagus, remains outside the patient, the control handle including a first actuator for moving the jaws relative to one another and a second actuator for operating the stapling mechanism.

Apparatus and method for resectioning gastro-esophageal tissue

An endovascular stapler () for securing an endograft to a vessel is disclosed. The stapler has a staple housing (), an actuating mechanism () and an expansion mechanism (). The staple housing () has a plurality of staple cartridges () adapted for storing at least one staple () therein. The staple cartridges () have an exit area () for discharging at least one of the staples () therethrough. The actuating assembly () is adapted for actuating the plurality of staple cartridges () to discharge the at least one staple through the exit area. The expansion mechanism () is in operative association with staple cartridges (). The expansion mechanism () is operative for pushing the exit area () against the endograft when discharging the at least one staple therethrough.

Stapling device

A hemostasis device for percutaneously sealing a puncture in the wall of a blood vessel includes a rigid post, and a foot, a seal and a retaining member mounted on the rigid post. The hemostasis device may be deployed in the puncture so that the foot is positioned within the blood vessel. Tension is applied to the rigid post to hold the foot against the inside surface of the blood vessel. The retaining member is then pushed along the length of the rigid post, advancing the seal to a deployed state against the outside surface of the blood vessel. The puncture in the blood vessel is sandwiched between the foot and the seal in the deployed state. The rigid post, foot, seal and retaining member may all be formed from a resorbable polymeric material.

Vascular hemostasis device and deployment apparatus

A surgical instrument for anastomosis of first and second blood vessels includes a housing having distal and proximal ends, a handle and a disposable loading unit removably mounted to the distal end of the housing. The loading unit includes upper and lower fastener support members having a passage defined therethrough for receiving an end of the second blood vessel and configured to releasably support a plurality of surgical fasteners. The loading unit also includes a retractable anvil located at a distal end of the loading unit, the anvil being movable relative to the fastener support member in response to actuation of the handle to simultaneously deform the of surgical fasteners.

Anastomosis instrument and method for performing same

A thrombectomy apparatus for breaking up thrombus or other obstructive material in a lumen of a vascular graft or vessel includes a flexible sheath and a wire positioned within the flexible sheath, wherein the wire and flexible sheath are relatively movable. The wire is substantially sinuous in configuration and assumes a substantially sinuous shape when deployed from the flexible sheath and a straighter configuration when retracted into the flexible sheath. The wire is operatively connected to a motor for rotation of the wire to enable the deployed wire to break up the thrombus or other obstructive material.

Rotational thrombectomy device

There is disclosed a surgical instrument and loading unit for performing an anastomosis of first and second blood vessels. The surgical instrument includes a handle assembly and a body portion extending distally from the handle assembly. The detachable loading unit includes an anvil releasably engagable with a distal end of the body portion and having a plurality of fasteners disposed in channels about the circumference of a distal end of the anvil. A pusher is slidably mounted over the anvil such that distal movement of the pusher in response to actuation of the handle assembly cams the fasteners between the anvil and a distal end of the pusher to simultaneously crimp the fasteners about tissue. A method of performing an anastomosis is also disclosed and includes positioning a first vessel in the loading unit and partially inserting the first vessel through an opening in a second vessel. The surgical instrument is subsequently attached to the loading unit and the handle assembly is actuated to crimp fasteners about the first and second vessels to form an anastomosis.

Surgical retractor

Apparatus and method for surgery is disclosed which includes a retractor having a substantially planar base defining an opening for overlying an operative site on a patient, and at least one retractor blade slidably mounted to the base. The base is positioned on the patient such that the opening therein overlies the operative site. The operative site is percutaneously accessed, and obstructing tissue is retracted by engaging the tissue with the retractor blade. A surgical instrument is provided which is engageable with the base and operable at the operative site through the opening in the base. A surgical procedure is carried out through the opening in the base with the surgical instrument.

A cannula assembly for insertion through tissue is provided having a housing and a cannula having a proximal end portion and a distal end portion. The cannula is supported at the proximal end portion by the housing. The cannula has a first predetermined length and is shortenable to a second predetermined length relative to the housing.

Valve assembly for sealed reception of an elongated object includes a valve body having at least one opening configured and dimensioned to permit entry of an elongated object and defining a central longitudinal axis, an elongated seal member formed of a resilient material and defining an aperture in general alignment with the opening of the valve body whereby the aperture is configured and dimensioned such that insertion of the object into the aperture causes the resilient material defining the aperture to resiliently engage the outer surface of the object in a substantially fluid flight manner, and at least one elongated guard member disposed within the seal member in supporting contact with the inner surface thereof. The guard member is positioned to engage the elongated object upon at least partial insertion of the elongated object into the valve body. The guard member includes at least a first substantially rigid portion adapted to be displaced relative to the longitudinal axis to facilitate expansion of the aperture of the seal member upon entry of the object therein and a second portion having less rigidity than the first portion of the guard member to enhance passage of the elongated object through the valve body.

Valve system for cannula assembly

A surgical instrument for anastomosis of first and second blood vessels is provided having a handle and a body portion extending distally from the handle. A collet is mounted adjacent a distal end portion of the body portion and defines a passage therethrough for the reception of an end of a first blood vessel. A plurality of surgical fasteners are releasably supported by the collet and radially oriented about the distal end thereof. An anvil is mounted adjacent of the collet. The anvil and collet are relatively slidable in response to actuation of the handle to simultaneously deform then release the surgical fasteners.
