Compounds having a 5 membered, nitrogen containing ring with a thione group adjacent to a nitrogen atom substituted with an OR group have antimicrobial properties. Metal complexes or salts of these compounds also have antimicrobial properties. The compounds, or the metal complexes or salts thereof, can be used as a cutting fluid preservative, a wood preservative, in cooling water applications or as an antimicrobial agent in a paint. Some of the compounds are new. The metal complexes or salts are new.

Personal care formulations

A composition comprising (a) a metal salt or complex with an organic compound of the general formula ##STR1## and (b) an oxy-phosphorus compound where W may be --SH or an optionally substituted hydrocarbyl group, Q is --OH, hydrogen or optionally substituted hydrocarbyl and Z is hydrogen or optionally substituted hydrocarbyl and Q and Z or Z and W may complete a ring. The compounds are typically metal complexes of thiohydroxamic acids or dithiocarbamates. The metal is typically zinc. The compositions exhibit improved aqueous solubility compared with the metal complexes alone, and can be used as industrial biocides, especially fungicides and particularly in paint films and latices.

Antimicrobial composition comprising N-hydroxy heterocyclic thiones

A solvent soluble heterocyclic o-hydroxy thione carrying a lipophilic group and the process for the selective extraction of gallium, and certain other related metals, especially from solutions containing excess aluminium.

A compound of the formula ##STR1## in which R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 taken together, and R.sup.3 and R.sup.4 taken together, independently represent a polymethylene chain leaving 3 or 4 carbon atoms, or a polymethylene chain having 3 or 4 carbon atoms substituted by at least one lower alkyl radical having from 1 to 4 carbon atoms and R.sup.5 to R.sup.8 are independently hydrogen, hydrocarbyl or substituted hydrocarbyl. Typically R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 and also R.sup.3 and R.sup.4 complete a trimethylene ring, R.sup.5 and R.sup.7 are each hydrogen and R.sup.6 and R.sup.8 are alkyl such as methyl. The compounds have microbiological activity.

A compound of the formula ##STR1## in which R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 taken together represent a polymethylene chain having 3 or 4 carbon atoms, or a polymethylene chain having 3 or 4 carbon atoms substituted by at least one lower alkyl radical having 1 to 4 carbon atoms, R.sup.3 is hydrogen, hydrocarbyl or substituted hydrocarbyl and X represents cyano, a group --SO.sub.3 M or a group --S--R.sup.4 where M is hydrogen or an alkali metal such as sodium and R.sup.4 is hydrocarbyl or substituted hydrocarbyl. Typically R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 complete a cyclopentene ring, R.sup.3 is alkyl such as methyl and X is a group --SO.sub.3 Na. The compounds have microbiological activity.

Sulfur containing diamides and antimicrobial use

A bromo-nitro compound of the general formula ##STR1## where R, R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 can be hydrogen, or a hydrocarbyl group and R can also be R.sup.3 CO or R.sup.3 NHCO and n has a value of at least one. R and R.sup.1 can both be hydrogen. The value of n is typically one. Compounds of this type have anti-microbial properties, expecially anti-bacterial properties. The compounds can be used as industrial biocides, especially in water treatment.

Anti-microbial bromo-nitro compounds

A process for extracting metal values such as gallium and/or indium from aqueous solutions by contacting said solutions with a water immiscible organic solvent having dissolved therein a heterocyclic thione.
