An apparatus () and a method of ink jet printing are disclosed that use a system for feeding a substrate longitudinally relative to a support area and a system for moving a printhead parallel to the direction of substrate feed. Indexing between transverse scan rows of a printhead () is carried out initially by the substrate feed system () and the actual feed distance is measured using an encoder or other substrate position measurement device (). A controller () determines the amount of any error that occurs between the actual and the desired feed distances. The controller () then sends signals to move the printhead () to compensate for any error in the feed system feed. Compensating adjustments are then made to the next subsequent substrate indexing step so that the printhead tends to move back toward its home or zeroed position with its next correction and does not walk away from this home position as a result of cumulative movements. For printers that have bridges () moveable relative to the machine frame () on which the printhead () is carried, printhead motion is achieved by moving the bridge, for example, by actuating a linear servo bridge motion system (). For fixed bridge roll-to-roll printers, the printhead () can be caused to shift longitudinally on the bridge () to make the correcting movements.

High precision feed particularly useful for UV ink jet printing on vinyl

In a quilting machine for quilting or stitching textile formations of cover-material webs and filler-material webs, the material webs to be stitched together are loosely withdrawn from stock rollers and sewn together along lengthwise edges or marginal portions of the material webs prior to entering a tenter device. Sewing the lengthwise edges or marginal portions includes simultaneously sewing on respective bands or ribbons which laterally extend beyond a workpiece to be quilted and serve for holding or accommodating the latter in the tenter device. It is thus possible to substantially provide the entire width of the cover-material webs and filler-material webs with a quilt pattern. In this manner, the length of waste cuttings of expensive cover material is substantially reduced.

An elongated workpiece is transported forwardly and backwards in a sewing or stitching machine by looping it upstream and downstream of the sewing or stitching station, by maintaining both loops under tension, by increasing the size of the downstream loop simultaneously with a reduction of the size of the upstream loop, and vice versa.

A connecting link for setting stitch width or length is fashioned as a flat metal piece and is retained on the bearing side in a molded-on synthetic resin bearing head. The bearing head is suspended by means of two trunnions on a bearing bracket and on an index lever attached to the bearing bracket. The sliding block is constituted by a sliding sleeve made of a synthetic resin, encompassing the connecting link and articulated by way of two trunnions to the linkage leading to the needle bar frame.

Stitch length and width adjusting linkage

The lifting device (19) of the presser foot (21) of a sewing machine is operable through the use of an operating axle (18) and a toggle lever (20). The operating axle (18) is connected to a slide (15) capable of engaging and disengaging a coupling mechanism (10). The coupling mechanism (10) is arranged between the lifting device (6) of the feed dog (3) and the oscillating drive means (7) of the lifting device. During the lifting of the presser foot (21) by means of the toggle lever (20), the coupling pin (12) of the coupling mechanism (10) is simultaneously placed out of engagement with the driven oscillating lever (8) by means of the slide (15). Thus the drive of the lifting device (6) is interrupted, and a spring (13) pulls the feed dog (3) into its lowered position. Thus the manipulation of the sewing material is made possible without the feed dog presenting an obstacle.
