The invention relates to a substrate () for manufacturing an organic conversion device for converting electrical energy into light energy or light energy into electrical energy, wherein the substrate comprises a) an encapsulation layer () on the substrate, wherein the encapsulation layer includes a first inorganic layer (), a second inorganic layer () and an intermediate organic layer (), and b) a getter reservoir () in contact with the organic layer of the encapsulation layer. Water molecules will therefore not only be transported along the intermediate organic layer, but will also be gathered, especially absorbed, by the getter reservoir, if the encapsulation is damaged. This can slow down a transport of water molecules along a leakage path towards an organic conversion layer of the organic conversion device and hence slow down a possible degradation of the performance of the organic conversion device, if the encapsulation layer is damaged.

The present invention relates to an encapsulated semiconductor device () provided on a flexible substrate (), a method of providing an at least partially encapsulated semiconductor device () on a flexible substrate () and a software product for providing an at least partially encapsulated semiconductor device () on a flexible substrate (). In a preferred embodiment, an encapsulation method is presented in which the organic layer () of an inorganic/organic/inorganic multilayer barrier () on a plastic foil () as a substrate is removed at the edges of an OLED (). The edges are subsequently sealed with a standard TFE process to encapsulate the OLED (). This enables cuttable OLEDs () that are cut out of a larger plastic substrate () and gives a method to reduce side leakage in OLEDs () that have been manufactured in a roll-to-toll process.

The invention relates to OLEDs () having a substrate (), a first electrode layer (), a layer of organic electroluminescence material (), a second electrode layer (), a cover layer (), moisture-absorbing means () and a separating foil () of resilient material. According to the invention, said foil () is positioned between the second electrode layer () and the moisture-absorbing means (). This feature results in a longer mean life-time of the OLED. Advantageously spacer structures () (preferably formed as dots) are applied on the separating foil () between the foil () and the cover (). This prevents discoloring effects around the rim of the OLED material.

An apparatus is described for coating a flexible substrate with at least a first organic layer and a first inorganic layer. The apparatus comprises a first and a second chamber and an atmosphere decoupling slot between the first and the second chamber. A printing facility is arranged in the first chamber, for printing the flexible substrate with a mixture comprising at least one precursor for a polymer, oligomer or a polymer network and a polymerization initiator. A curing facility is arranged in the first chamber, for curing the deposited mixture, therewith forming the at least first organic layer. A vapor deposition facility is arranged in the second chamber, for depositing the at least first inorganic layer at the substrate provided with the at least first organic layer. The apparatus comprises a facility for guiding the flexible substrate along the printing facility, along the curing facility and via the atmosphere decoupling slot along the vapor deposition facility.

An organic electroluminescence device (OLED) has a substrate, a first electrode layer, a layer of organic electroluminescence material, a second electrode layer, a cover layer, a moisture-absorber and a separating foil of resilient material. The separating foil is positioned between the second electrode layer and the moisture-absorber. Spacer structures such as dots are applied on the separating foil between the foil and the cover.

An opto-electric device is presented that comprises an opto-electric element enclosed by a barrier structure for inhibiting a transmission of moisture from an environment towards the opto-electric element. The barrier structure includes a stack of layers comprising at least an inorganic layer and a moisture getter material in a layer arranged between the inorganic layer and the opto-electric element. The stack includes a lateral diffusion layer, wherein the getter material is present in a separate getter layer arranged between the opto-electric element and the lateral diffusion layer and/or the getter material is present in the lateral diffusion layer.
