Articulated fitting for seats having an adjustable backrest, in particular motor vehicle seats. The articulated fitting has an articulated part which is stationary with respect to the seat part and a swivelable articulated part associated with the backrest, these articulated parts being connected with one another via a swivel axle. The position of the two articulated parts relative to one another is determined by an adjusting and fixing device constructed as a gear unit. The swivel axle has an eccentric portion which is formed by two wedge segments which embrace a driver of the swivel axle, by a driver arm engaging between the narrow sides of the wedge segments, by an energy accumulator which presses apart the wide sides of the wedge segments and possibly by a centering segment arranged adjacent to the latter. The swivel axle has a central receptacle serving to connect with a transmission rod so as to be fixed with respect to rotation relative thereto. In order to achieve a reduction in structural component parts and an angular movability between the swivel axles of the articulated fittings on both sides and the transmission rod so as to compensate for alignment defects, the driver is constructed as a bushing which is connected with the driver arm integrated in the driver and with a cover disk covering the outer side of the articulated region and has a torque-transmitting receptacle for the transmission rod, this receptacle being constructed as a conical bore hole.

A vehicle seat which is adjustable both with regard to its height and angle of inclination has front and rear height mechanisms which can be operated independently of one another. Each of the height adjustment mechanisms has at least one lever, which levers are pivotable about an axis running in the lateral direction of the seat. The upholstery support of the seat is supported on support points of these levers, which lie at a distance from their pivot axes. The front and rear height adjustment mechanisms are connected with a coupling drive, which, when the front height adjustment mechanism is activated limits the height adjustment of this front height adjustment mechanism, and when the rear height adjustment mechanism is activated, the height adjustment of the support point thereof is transferred to the support point of the front height adjustment mechanism.

In a vehicle seat, particularly a motor vehicle seat, the back rest of which includes at least one forwardly projecting side wing in the area supporting the shoulders of the user. The side wing is provided with at least one recess in which an air bag and actuating device is located. Upon lateral impact the air bag inflates to protect the sideways movement of the user's head.

Vehicle seat adjustable both as to height and inclination

A vehicle seat having an upholstery support that supports the upholstery of the back rest has at least one arm provided on the upholstery support which extends over the shoulder of a seat user and restrains the user in the upward and outward directions during vehicle collision. A side restraint member is connected with the arm and configured so as to protect the user in a lateral direction without interfering with the freedom of movement of the user.
