Disclosed herein are methods and systems for distinguishing a nuisance gas from a target gas or group of target gases, which involve a configuration of a light source () and paper tape () such that light () emitted from the light source () can reflect off the paper tape (). The light () can emit in at least three wavelengths selected from red, green, blue, and ultra-violet wavelengths, and pattern recognition can be used to identify and/or distinguish the nuisance gas from the target gas or from the group of target gases.

The present disclosure relates to methods and apparatus for detecting when respiratory cartridges of a respirator have reached their end-of-service-life. In some instances, two or more respiratory cartridges are removably connectable to a respirator housing, where each of the two or more respiratory cartridges receives ambient air and deliver cleaned air to the respirator housing. One of the respiratory cartridges may be configured to have a lower adsorption capacity than the remaining respirator cartridges. A gas sensor may be situated downstream of the reduced capacity respirator cartridge, and may detect an increased concentration of the targeted gas in the cleaned air delivered by the reduced capacity respiratory cartridge. When detected, an end-of-service-life indication may be provided to the user.

A photoacoustic gas sensor includes a photoacoustic cell configured to receive a gas mixture having a first gas component and a second gas component. The photoacoustic gas sensor also includes a light source configured to provide light to the photoacoustic cell. The photoacoustic gas sensor further includes a photoacoustic cell controller configured to measure a concentration of the second gas component using a speed of sound through the gas mixture, where the speed of sound is determined based on an absorption associated with the first gas component. In addition, the photoacoustic gas sensor could include a temperature sensor configured to measure a temperature of the gas mixture, where the photoacoustic cell controller is configured to determine the concentration of the second gas component using the speed of sound and the temperature.

A sensor system for detection of gas with a modified ion selection FET. The FET may have a gate of low conductivity material for detection of a species in a fluid. A component such as a capacitor may be connected to an electrode of the FET, such as a source, in conjunction with the FET to reduce noise of the detection signal of the species. One or more current sources may provide a current through the FET, and through a resistor to provide a constant source-to-drain voltage. The system may have a bulk voltage selection of either that of a voltage approximately equal to the FET source voltage or greater than the FET source voltage. Also, a guard ring may be implemented in the FET for preventing leakage currents relative to the source or drain.

FET-based gas sensor system

A system for testing and calibrating gas sensors with gas stored in a strip of packets. The strip may be fed into a chamber having a defined volume of air. A packet may be punctured with a mechanism to release one or more gases into the volume of air to result in an air-gas mixture. New air may be moved into the chamber to push the mixture out of the chamber to a sensor for testing and/or calibration. Then another packet may be punctured to release one or more gases into the volume of new air in the chamber for another air-gas mixture. This mixture may be moved out of the chamber, in the same manner as the previous mixture, to another sensor for testing and/or calibration. This procedure may be repeated with additional packets on the strip.
