Embodiments described herein are directed to methods and apparatuses for remotely managing electrical and gas devices. In one scenario, a computer system performs a method for remotely managing electrical devices. The method may include determining that an electrical device has changed state, notifying at least one user that the electrical device has changed state, and either receiving an indication from the user that the electrical device is to be turned off, and turning the electrical device off, or receiving an indication from the user that the electrical device is to be turned on, and turning the electrical device on.

Remote device management

Embodiments are directed to methods and apparatuses for remotely managing electrical devices. In one scenario, a computer system performs a method for remotely managing electrical devices. The method includes determining that an electrical device has been left turned on for a threshold minimum period of time. The method next includes determining that a first device management criteria has been met indicating that the electrical device is no longer being actively managed. The method then includes notifying a user that the electrical device is still turned on, receiving an indication that the electrical device is to be turned off, and turning the electrical device off. Other scenarios include an electronic device that allows remote management of electrical devices.

A safety shut-off system and method are provided for eliminating power to a load in the event of smoke detection. The system may comprise a device located at the appliance for detecting a signal from a smoke detector, and cutting power to the appliance only when the appliance is in use. The device may be synchronized with any standard smoke alarm signal to reduce the number of false positive shut-offs. The system may also comprise a smoke alarm hard-wired to a circuit breaker, for shutting off power to all appliances on a particular breaker upon receipt of a signal from the smoke alarm, and only when the appliances on the breaker are in use. The system may also have the ability to shut off one breaker, multiple breakers, or all breakers at different time increments to actively prevent and reduce the damages caused by fires.
