Techniques are provided to optomechanically couple light to a crystal structure, thereby producing stable, coherent bulk acoustic modes within the structure. In some embodiments, a resonator may comprise a plano-convex crystal structure to which pump light may be applied. The pump light may transfer energy to acoustic phonon modes of the crystal structure so as to create acoustic phonon modes with a coherence length greater than a length of the crystal structure. High frequency and high quality factor resonators may thereby be produced and operated.

Acousto-optic coupling techniques and related systems and methods

An optical amplifier device employing a Mach-Zehnder Interferometer (MZI) that reduces the amount of residual pump power in the optical output of the amplifier is disclosed. The MZI amplifier employs two geometrically linear optical amplifier arms or two multi-spatial-mode racetrack optical amplifiers to amplify a signal with a pumping beam, with the signal output port having extremely low levels of residual pump power. The MZI optical amplifier is a silicon photonic integrated circuit, with all optical amplifiers, couplers, phase shifters, and optical attenuators formed of silicon photonic integrated circuit elements. The MZI optical amplifier may include one, two, or three MZI stages, and multiple MZI optical amplifiers may be used in parallel or sequentially to achieve higher overall signal gain or power. The MZI optical amplifier may employ Brillouin-scattering-based amplifiers, Raman-based integrated waveguide optical amplifiers, or Erbium-doped integrated waveguide optical amplifiers.

Integrated silicon optical amplifier with reduced residual pump

Devices and systems for opto-acoustic signal processing are described herein. In one embodiment, the device may include a structure configured to laterally confine travelling acoustic phonons (hypersound) throughout, a first multimode optical waveguide embedded within the structure, and an acoustic phonon emitter within the structure, where the first multimode optical waveguide is selected to couple to the acoustic phonons (hypersound) confined within the structure. In one embodiment, the system may include a first light source optically coupled to a proximal end of the first multimode optical waveguide, the first light source emitting a probe wave having a frequency &#x3c9;, and a driver configured to drive the acoustic phonon emitter to emit acoustic phonons (hypersound).

Opto-acoustic signal processing

Techniques for producing a Brillouin laser are provided. According to some aspects, techniques are based on forward Brillouin scattering and a multimode acousto-optic waveguide in which light is scattered between optical modes of the waveguide via the Brillouin scattering. This process may transfer energy from a waveguide mode of pump light to a waveguide mode of Stokes light. This process may be referred to herein as Stimulated Inter-Modal Brillouin Scattering (SIMS). Since SIMS is based on forward Brillouin scattering, laser (Stokes) light may be output in a different direction than back toward the input pump light, and as such there is no need for a circulator or other non-reciprocal device to protect the pump light as in conventional devices.

Brillouin laser

Techniques for operating a mechanical oscillator as a quantum memory are described. According to some aspects, a qubit may be coupled to a piezoelectric material such that the electric field of the qubit causes stress within the piezoelectric material. The piezoelectric material may be in contact with a crystalline substrate forming an acoustic resonator such that the qubit couples to bulk acoustic waves in the crystalline substrate via its interaction with the piezoelectric material. According to some aspects, application of a suitable electromagnetic pulse to the qubit may cause an exchange of energy from the qubit to the acoustic phonon system and thereby transfer quantum information from the qubit to the phonon system.

Techniques for coupling qubits to acoustic resonators and related systems and methods

A photonic modulator is provided that includes a transducer element that receives a RF input signal and converts the RF input signal into an elastic wave. One or more optical waveguides receive the elastic wave that has propagated a specified distance through an acoustic delay line. The one or more optical waveguides perform optomechanical transduction on the elastic wave in the presence of an optical wave, which produces one or more scattered optical waves. An optical circuit sums the one or more scattered waves to produce an optical signal output.

Electro-mechanic-photonic delay line for analog signal processing

The various technologies presented herein relate to various hybrid phononic-photonic waveguide structures that can exhibit nonlinear behavior associated with traveling-wave forward stimulated Brillouin scattering (forward-SBS). The various structures can simultaneously guide photons and phonons in a suspended membrane. By utilizing a suspended membrane, a substrate pathway can be eliminated for loss of phonons that suppresses SBS in conventional silicon-on-insulator (SOI) waveguides. Consequently, forward-SBS nonlinear susceptibilities are achievable at about 3000 times greater than achievable with a conventional waveguide system. Owing to the strong phonon-photon coupling achievable with the various embodiments, potential application for the various embodiments presented herein cover a range of radiofrequency (RF) and photonic signal processing applications. Further, the various embodiments presented herein are applicable to applications operating over a wide bandwidth, e.g. 100 MHz to 50 GHz or more.

Guided wave opto-acoustic device

A radio-frequency photonic devices employs photon-phonon coupling for information transfer. The device includes a membrane in which a two-dimensionally periodic phononic crystal (PnC) structure is patterned. The device also includes at least a first optical waveguide embedded in the membrane. At least a first line-defect region interrupts the PnC structure. The first optical waveguide is embedded within the line-defect region.

On-chip photonic-phononic emitter-receiver apparatus

Quasi-phase matched (QPM), semiconductor photonic waveguides include periodically-poled alternating first and second sections. The first sections exhibit a high degree of optical coupling (abbreviated 'X'), while the second sections have a low X. The alternating first and second sections may comprise high-strain and low-strain sections made of different material states (such as crystalline and amorphous material states) that exhibit high and low Xproperties when formed on a particular substrate, and/or strained corrugated sections of different widths. The QPM semiconductor waveguides may be implemented as silicon-on-insulator (SOI), or germanium-on-silicon structures compatible with standard CMOS processes, or as silicon-on-sapphire (SOS) structures.

Methods of producing strain in a semiconductor waveguide and related devices

A passively athermal photonic system including a photonic circuit having a substrate and an optical cavity defined on the substrate, and passive temperature-responsive provisions for inducing strain in the optical cavity of the photonic circuit to compensate for a thermo-optic effect resulting from a temperature change in the optical cavity of the photonic circuit. Also disclosed is a method of passively compensating for a temperature dependent thermo-optic effect resulting on an optical cavity of a photonic circuit including the step of passively inducing strain in the optical cavity as a function of a temperature change of the optical cavity thereby producing an elasto-optic effect in the optical cavity to compensate for the thermo-optic effect resulting on an optical cavity due to the temperature change.

Athermalization of resonant optical devices via thermo-mechanical feedback

An optical beam-steering apparatus is provided. The apparatus includes one or more optical waveguides and at least one row of metallic nanoantenna elements overlying and electromagnetically coupled to a respective waveguide. In each such row, individual nanoantenna elements are spaced apart along an optical propagation axis of the waveguide so that there is an optical propagation phase delay between successive pairs of nanoantenna elements along the row. The apparatus also includes a respective single electric heating element in thermal contact with each of the waveguides. Each heating element is arranged to heat, substantially uniformly, at least that portion of its waveguide that directly underlies the corresponding row of nanoantenna elements.

Method and apparatus of wide-angle optical beamsteering from a nanoantenna phased array

Thermal control devices, photonic systems and methods of stabilizing a temperature of a photonic system are provided. A thermal control device thermally coupled to a substrate includes a waveguide for receiving light, an absorption element optically coupled to the waveguide for converting the received light to heat and an optical filter. The optical filter is optically coupled to the waveguide and thermally coupled to the absorption element. An operating point of the optical filter is tuned responsive to the heat from the absorption element. When the operating point is less than a predetermined temperature, the received light is passed to the absorption element via the optical filter. When the operating point is greater than or equal to the predetermined temperature, the received light is transmitted out of the thermal control device via the optical filter, without being passed to the absorption element.

Passive thermo-optic feedback for robust athermal photonic systems

A waveguide system includes a first waveguide having surface roughness along at least one surface and a second waveguide substantially identical to the first waveguide and having substantially identical surface roughness along a corresponding side. The first and second waveguides are separated from each other by a predetermined distance and are configured to receive respective first and second light signals having antisymmetric modes. The predetermined distance between the first and second waveguide tends to cause cancellation of at least far-field polarization radiation emanating from the first and second waveguides and resulting from the surface roughness.

Ultralow loss cavities and waveguides scattering loss cancellation

A nano-optomechanical transducer provides ultrabroadband coherent optomechanical transduction based on Mach-wave emission that uses enhanced photon-phonon coupling efficiencies by low impedance effective phononic medium, both electrostriction and radiation pressure to boost and tailor optomechanical forces, and highly dispersive electromagnetic modes that amplify both electrostriction and radiation pressure. The optomechanical transducer provides a large operating bandwidth and high efficiency while simultaneously having a small size and minimal power consumption, enabling a host of transformative phonon and signal processing capabilities. These capabilities include optomechanical transduction via pulsed phonon emission and up-conversion, broadband stimulated phonon emission and amplification, picosecond pulsed phonon lasers, broadband phononic modulators, and ultrahigh bandwidth true time delay and signal processing technologies.
