The present invention provides an obturator tip having a rigid, elongated, distal section having a blunt, rounded, distal end designed to separate tissue. The distal section is connected to a proximal section by a central section having tapered outer surfaces. The obturator tip of the present invention is equipped with arc shaped blades positioned on opposite sides of the tip and 180 degrees apart from each other. In one embodiment, the arc shaped blades are positioned rearwardly with respect to the distal section of the obturator. This feature of the present invention allows the elongated distal section to create a small, non-cutting tissue separating track prior to blade contact with the patient.

Obturator tip

An obturator tip for a trocar is disclosed. The obturator comprises a shaft having a distal or penetration end for insertion into a patient and a handling or proximal end for gripping by a surgeon. The penetration end of the shaft comprises a tip having an upper flat face and a lower flat face which taper away from the shaft toward the distal end. The tip further comprises flat side faces which also taper or slope from the shaft toward the distal end. A glide tip has a rounded end and extends outwardly along the side faces.

Obturator tip for a trocar

A trocar is disclosed which comprises a body assembly and a cannula assembly attached to the body assembly to define a bore therethrough. The disclosed trocar also includes an obturator assembly for sliding engagement in the bore. The obturator assembly comprises a shaft having a longitudinal axis and having a distal end for insertion into a patient. The distal end of the obturator includes a tip which is non-conical and which has upper and lower faces that taper away from the shaft to form a V-shaped distal end of the tip. Wing elements provided between the upper and lower faces proximate the distal end of the tip, and the wing elements are spaced apart approximately 180 degrees from one another. The tip of the obturator may also include dorsal elements on the upper and lower faces.

Trocar

A trocar is disclosed which includes a housing assembly and a cannula assembly attached to the housing assembly to define an axial bore therethrough. The trocar further includes an obturator assembly which slidably engages the axial bore defined by the cannula assembly. The obturator assembly includes a shaft having a piercing end for insertion into a patient and a handling end for gripping by a surgeon. Attached to the piercing end of the shaft is a piercing tip having an upper face and a lower face which taper away from the shaft to form a non-conical, blunt head. The piercing tip further includes wing elements located on opposite sides of the piercing tip between the upper face and lower face. These wing elements have a lateral edges.

A trocar is disclosed which comprises a housing assembly having an upper end and a lower end and a cannula assembly attached to the lower end of the housing assembly to define an axial bore therethrough. The disclosed trocar also includes an obturator for sliding engagement in the bore. The housing assembly includes an access port formed on the upper end which is axially aligned with the bore of the trocar. Communication via the access port of the housing is regulated by a flapper valve having a closed position and a range of open positions. The flapper valve comprises a metal flapper door having a male/female configuration formed around the protrusion. In the closed position, the protrusion of the flapper door engages the male/female configuration of both door and port mesh resulting in a metal-to-metal seal across the access port. The metal-to-metal seal provides enhanced resistance to mechanical, heat, and chemical wear encountered during surgical and sterilization operations.

An obturator assembly having a removable obturator tip, a first engagement device, an obturator shaft, a second engagement device, and a biased flexible member, whereby the obturator tip may be removed by flexing the flexible member against its bias, and a plurality of different obturator tips may be attached to the obturator shaft.

Obturator assembly

A trocar having a safety shield control mechanism that prevents the inner cannula from rotating and from moving axially when in the locked position. The safety shield control mechanism applies consistent pressure on the safety shield and has an open architecture for ease of sterilization. The trocar provides holding levels for different sizes of hands.
