A method for decorating a substrate using novel thiol-stabilised gold nanoparticles of the general formula HSR where R is a C-Calkyl group, aryl, benzyl, alicyclic, or heterocyclic group which is substituted or unsubstituted, branched or unbranched. The thiol-stabilised gold nanoparticles exhibit a plasmon frequency of between 480 and 600 nm.

Method of decorating a substrate by application of gold nanoparticles

A glass frit is prepared by heating an initial glass frit in the presence of a reducing agent so as to reduce metal moiety in the glass structure of the frit and then cooling the reaction mixture. Preferably, the frit prepared is used in a method of forming electrically conducting silver tracks on enamel on glass windows, by applying to window glass an enamel composition containing the frit and on top thereof a silver composition in the shape of the tracks and firing the compositions, such that on the firing the reduced metal moiety reduces silver ions migrating through the enamel composition from the silver composition to elemental silver and thereby prevents or impairs them from interacting with the glass to form visible tracks.

Precious metal composition

A homogeneous composition for forming on firing a film of precious metal, which is one or more of platinum, palladium, gold and silver, on a substrate, for instance to decorate table ware, comprises polymeric resin and a solution, in water and a co-solvent, of thiolate of the precious metal, the composition containing 3-22% by weight of the precious metal as the thiolate, and the co-solvent, resin and thiolate being such that as the composition on a substrate dries and is progressively heated in firing, the water evaporates off to leave a homogeneous composition of the resin and thiolate in the co-solvent, then the co-solvent evaporates off to leave a homogeneous composition of the thiolate in the resin, and then the thiolate decomposes to the precious metal while the resin volatilize.
