Calender for calendering a paper web

The invention concerns a calender which comprises a vertical stack of interlinked rollers driven individually by regulated electric motors. The regulation process acts on the distribution of the delivered power to the individual rollers such that the forces acting on the rollers in the horizontal direction and measured in the roller bearings are minimized, so enabling slimmer rollers to be used.

A vertical calender arrangement comprises a controllable-deflection top roll, a controllable-deflection bottom roll and intermediate rolls arranged between top and bottom rolls. The top roll and the bottom roll are each provided with a power drive.

Calender arrangement

A calender for treating a paper web, having at least one roll stack capable of being loaded from the end and in each case comprising a top and bottom end roll and a plurality of intermediate rolls, which are jointly arranged in a roll stack plane, and the rolls including hard and soft rolls in order to form operating nips in the form of soft nips, wherein each soft roll which forms an intermediate roll has a greater diameter than a soft roll which forms an end roll.

A calender arrangement includes end rolls that are in the form of deflection controlled rolls having an internal stroke. One of the end rolls comprises at least one stop element that is in the form of a hydraulic positioned hydrostatic element which, together with the internal wall of the roll sleeve, defines a gap. When a constant throughput of hydraulic medium is fed in, an equilibrium of forces is produced, at which equilibrium the roll sleeve is positioned. The pressure built up in the process is a measure of the positioning forces. Small departures from the target position are permitted without control intervention.

Calender arrangement and a deflection controlled roll and method of operating them

The invention relates to a calender for treatment of a product web, having at least one roll stack comprising rolls arranged in a calender frame, the ends of which rolls are guided in roll mountings, which can be fastened to the calender frame by means of brackets, and having guiding means associated with the rolls for guiding a product web through nips formed between the individual rolls. For a rapid change-over with respect to the nature and intensity of the treatment of a product web in a calender, the brackets are in the form of modules, which support the rolls and are capable of being fastened individually to the calender frame and which have identical connecting devices for grouping, as desired, on the calender frame.

Apparatus for treating a product web

A roll which has a metallic core and an elastomeric envelope is obtained by assembling the cover from a stack of discs each of which surrounds the core. In order to impart to the cover a desired elasticity, the discs contain a fibrous material and a plastic substance and are pressed against each other in the longitudinal direction of the core. The plastic substance is hardenable within an interval exceeding 48 hours. The pressing step is started with a delay following the step of placing the discs around the core such that the hardening begins prior to compressing and is terminated within an interval not less than 48 hours following the start of the pressing step.

Method of making rolls with elastic covers

Apparatus for intermittently removing impurities from the periphery of a calender roll includes a rotary cleaning implement in the form of a brush or several felt discs and having an axial length in the range of 5-10 cm. The cleaning implement is reciprocable longitudinally of the roll along a suitable guide and can be driven back and forth by a motor so as to remove impurities which are detected by a mobile monitoring device. The latter can be mounted in or on a frame for the cleaning implement or is movable along the roll independently of the cleaning implement. The apparatus can be mounted at the inlet or outlet side of the nip of the calender roll with a companion roll. The frame for the cleaning implement can carry one or more nozzles which direct water or another liquid (such as a solvent) against the cleaning implement and/or against the roll, and one or more nozzles which blow jets of air against the periphery of the roll.

Apparatus for cleaning calender rolls and the like

A calender wherein a permanently installed main roll cooperates with at least one exchangeable roll to provide a nip for the passage of a web of paper or the like. The end portions of the exchangeable roll are mounted in bearings which are insertable into and extractible from sockets provided in levers which are pivotably mounted in the frame of the calender. The calender has a transporting unit which is provided with grippers for the bearings and with motors which reciprocate the grippers to extract the bearings from their sockets after the levers are pivoted to positions in which the exchangeable roll is spaced apart from the main roll. The transporting unit thereupon transfers the exchangeable roll onto a mobile rack which can be transported to a station where the exchangeable roll is repaired. The same rack or a discrete second rack can deliver a refurbished exchangeable roll to the transporting unit for introduction of the bearings on the refurbished roll into the sockets on the levers in the frame of the calender before the levers are pivoted to move the refurbished roll into engagement with a running web or with the main roll. Locking devices are provided to releasably hold the bearings in their sockets, and additional locking devices are provided to releasably hold the bearings in sockets which are provided on the rack or racks. The transporting unit can constitute a robot whose grippers then constitute effectors and whose operation is automated to start a roll exchanging operation as soon as one or more sensors in the calender ascertain that the quality of the exchangeable roll is unsatisfactory for further treatment of running webs.

A magnetic audio or video tape is smoothed and/or otherwise treated by causing it to pass through one or more calenders wherein a large-diameter primary calender roll is heated from within and the major part of its peripheral surface is surrounded by the running tape. The primary roll rotates about a fixed axis and is surrounded by a cluster of two or more smaller-diameter secondary calender rolls each of which has a viscoelastic peripheral layer and each of which can be individually biased against the adjacent portion of the running tape with a selected force. The magnetic film on the tape is out of contact with the secondary rolls as well as with the guide rollers which cause the tape to advance toward the peripheral surface of the primary roll and thereupon toward a takeup reel.

Method and apparatus for calendering magnetic tapes

The roll assembly of a calender has at least one roll with a deformable shell which surrounds a rigid carrier and whose end portions surround discrete antifriction bearings. The intermediate portion of the shell surrounds one or more rows of hydrostatic supporting elements which can be acted upon by adjustable fluid-operated motors to change the shape of the intermediate portion in a plane including the axes of the one roll and the neighboring roll as well as at right angles to such plane. Stresses which are applied to the bearings for the end portions of the shell are monitored by several sensors which transmit signals to a control system to regulate the deformation of the shell in such a way that the stresses upon the bearings are minimized or reduced to zero. This enables the intermediate portion of the shell to undergo deformation which is best suited for optimum treatment of the material passing through the nip of the one roll and the neighboring roll.
