Process for activating a steam reforming catalyst and the catalyst

A process for removing sulfur dioxide from an off-gas and converting it to elemental sulfur wherein steam is introduced into a sulfur dioxide-containing off-gas, and the composite is passed through a reactor containing a mixture of fresh and recycled coal.

Reduction of sulfur dioxide with recycled coal

The activation of coal, in which coal that has been partially oxidized with Sulfur Dioxide is introduced into a reaction zone. The coal is contacted with super-heated steam and then impregnated with vanadium.

A gas desulfurization process is disclosed wherein a particulate, partially oxidized coal is used as an adsorbent for gaseous sulfur oxides and is regenerated by contact with a low temperature recycled stream of its own desorbed off-gas containing at least 40% steam and 15% SO.sub.2. A bleed stream of the desorbed off-gas may be reacted with coal at 1150.degree. F. to 1550.degree. F. to partially oxidize the coal and transform it into an adsorbent suitable for use in the adsorber.

Desulfurization and low temperature regeneration of carbonaceous

A system for reducing sulfur dioxide in which a vessel is provided with an inlet for receiving coal and a plurality of gas distribution nozzles for receiving the sulfur dioxide and discharging same downwardly in the lower portion of the vessel for flowing upwardly in a counterflow relation to the coal. The coal flows through a distribution device located in the hopper section of the vessel for insuring an even distribution of coal through the vessel.

System for reducing sulfur dioxide

A continuous process for the selective removal of hydrogen sulfide from a hot gas stream containing hydrogen sulfide by contacting the effluent with particulate nickel or nickel oxide at a temperature whereby the hydrogen sulfide will react to form surface coatings of a sulfur/nickel liquid phase. The temperature of the system is maintained in a range so that the sulfur-containing liquid phase continuously drains off of the particulate solid phase exposing fresh surface areas for further reaction. The liquid phase separates from the solid phase, is removed from the reaction zone and collected for processing for recovery of nickel.

Nickel sulfide process for the removal of H.sub.2 S

A pollution control system and method in which sulfur oxides in flue gases are adsorbed by activated char in a gas-solid contacting device. The saturated char is regenerated in an integrated desorption-reduction vessel, to which crushed coal and combustion-supporting air are supplied. A portion of the crushed coal is burned to provide the heat for the regeneration of the char, resulting in the formation of sulfur dioxide and carbon dioxide gases, and the chemical consumption of a portion of the char. The remaining crushed coal reduces the sulfur dioxide to gaseous sulfur, and results in a material having a porous system suitable for use in the adsorption of sulfur oxides. The remaining regenerated char and the oxidized coal are cycled back to the gas-solid contacting device, and the gaseous sulfur is condensed to liquid in a condenser.

An improved process for the reduction of SO.sub.2 is provided in which a gas containing SO.sub.2 is contacted with granular coal in the presence of steam.

Reduction of SO.sub.2 with coal

A device for controlling the flow distribution through a regeneration vessel of a mixture of a carbonaceous adsorbent material and an inert material in an adsorbent material regeneration process in which a lower, conical section is supported by a hopper portion of the vessel, and an upper, conical section extends within the vessel. A plurality of angularly spaced flow passages extend longitudinally through the device, from the upper surface of the upper section to an interior chamber of the device disposed within the hopper, which is in fluid communication with the discharge of the vessel. The longitudinal axis of each passage is inclined at an angle of between 55.degree.-90.degree. relative to a base plane of the device, with 70.degree. being a preferred value.

Regeneration flow distribution device

A process and apparatus for producing methane by reacting carbon monoxide with hydrogen, the improvement comprising feeding a gas containing hydrogen and carbon monoxide into at least one tubular reactor containing a helical, nickel-containing catalyst (turbulator) are disclosed. The catalyst defines a spiral-shaped path for the gas. The exterior of the reaction tube is cooled to remove the heat of reaction. Preferably, additional heat of reaction is removed by passing a cooling medium through the center of the turbulator catalyst.

Methanation process

A system for removing pollutants from gases in which one or more beds of activated char are formed in a housing having an upper chamber and a lower chamber. A first series of beds of activated char extend through both the lower chamber and the upper chamber and an additional series of beds of activated char are disposed only in the lower chamber. A system of passages and baffles are provided in the housing to direct the gases in the upper chamber through the first series of beds of activated char, and the gases in the lower chamber through the first series of beds of activated char and then through the additional beds of activated char, before the gases exit from the housing.

Adsorber for removing pollutants from gases having uniform adsorption

A water sealing device for establishing a gas-tight seal between a stationary member and a vibratory member in which a water tank is supported upon and moves with the vibratory member, and at least one sealing element is supported upon the stationary member and extends below the water level in the tank. Means are provided for regulating the level of water in the tank. A material flow passage extends through the water tank to interconnect the stationary and vibratory members.

Water seal for regenerator

A system for reducing sulfur dioxide to elemental sulfur in which a reactor vessel is divided into a plurality of compartments, and coal is fed from a single source into each of the compartments. A sulfur dioxide rich gas is distributed to each of the compartments and is contacted with the coal to form substantially pure sulfur.

Modular system for reducing sulfur dioxide

Continuous process for the gasification of particulate coal with steam wherein SO.sub.2 is present, preferably through introduction into the steam, thereby enabling the steam to react with the coal at considerably lower than conventional temperatures such as temperatures ranging upwards of 1200.degree. F, preferably 1400.degree. F.

Process for the gasification of coal

Continuous process for the selective removal of hydrogen sulfide from a mixture of hot coal gasification gases containing hydrogen sulfide by contacting such mixture in a reaction or desulfurizing zone at an elevated temperature with a nickel-containing material whereby the nickel reacts with the hydrogen sulfide to form solid compounds from which the nickel content can be regenerated by oxidation and recycled back to the reaction zone, thereby effectively removing hydrogen sulfide from the hot gas mixture.
