Polymer substrates, for example ABS, PBT, PVC, PET, nylon 6, nylon 6'6, ABS/PBT, PC/ABS or ionomers, are made scratch resistant by the incorporation therein of an additive combination of b) a carboxylic acid reagent functionalized olefin polymer or copolymer and c) a primary or secondary fatty acid amide. The present polymers exhibit good weatherability, scratch resistance, good processability, good mechanical strength, good gloss retention and are non-sticky. The carboxylic acid reagent functionalized olefin polymer is for example maleic anhydride grafted polypropylene or polyethylene, or is a reaction product of maleic anhydride and an alpha-olefin, or is a tallow alcohol ester of said maleic anhydride products. The fatty acid amide is for example oleyl palmitamide or stearyl erucamide.

These compounds are effective stabilizers for thermoset resin compositions, thermoplastic resin compositions, for photographic applications, for pigmented or dyed polypropylene, polyamide or polyester fibers, and for white, dyed, dipped, unscented and/or scented candle wax against discoloration and fading when incorporated therein alone or in combination with an antioxidant.

Benzotriazole/hals molecular combinations and compositions stabilized therewith

The invention relates to thermoplastic polyolefin compositions having enhanced surface durability and products thereof which include a thermoplastic polyolefin base component at least one radiation-crosslinkable component present in an amount sufficient to enhance the surface durability of the thermoplastic polyolefin component when radiation-cured and at least one photoinitiator present in an amount sufficient to initiate crosslinking of the radiation-crosslinkable component upon exposure of the thermoplastic polyolefin composition to radiation. The invention further relates to methods of providing a cured thermoplastic polyolefin composition having enhanced surface durability by preparing a mixture having a thermoplastic polyolefin base component, at least one radiation-crosslinkable component in an amount sufficient to enhance the surface durability of the polyolefin when radiation cured, and at least one photoinitiator each in an amount sufficient to facilitate crosslinking of the radiation-crosslinkable component when a surface of the thermoplastic polyolefin composition is exposed to radiation, and then exposing the thermoplastic polyolefin composition to radiation in an amount sufficient to crosslink the radiation-crosslinkable component thereby providing a thermoplastic polyolefin composition having enhanced surface durability.

Hindered amines substituted on the N-atom with an &mdash;O&mdash;E&mdash;OH moiety are particularly effective in stabilizing polyolefin and automotive coating compositions against the deleterious effects of oxidative, thermal and actinic radiation where the presence of the OH group on the compounds adds important properties not attainable by the use of normal &mdash;O&mdash;E moieties.

Hydroxy-substituted N-alkoxy hindered amines and compositions stabilized therewith

Hindered amines substituted on the N-atom with an -O-E-OH moiety are particularly effective in stabilizing polyolefin and automotive coating compositions against the deleterious effects of oxidative, thermal and actinic radiation where the presence of the OH group on the compounds adds important properties not attainable by the use of normal -O-E moieties.
