A computer system for vehicles is provided in which the functions are partitioned among the computers of the computer system. A first computer takes over the driving-related functions, while a second computer having greater computing power takes over entertainment-specific functions.

In the case of a method for transformation encoding of moving-image sequences, motion vectors are estimated block-by-block, with which said motion vectors a motion compensation is carried out. The prediction error is transformation-encoded. According to the invention, the block size of the transformation encoding is coupled to the block size used in each case for the motion compensation. This measure makes it possible to enhance the efficiency of the encoding of the prediction error in hybrid encoding procedures that use various block sizes.

Method for transformation-coding full motion image sequences

In the method of coding according to the invention whether or not a predetermined encoder capacity parameter has been reached is tested prior to the actual coding of an image sequence. A reduction of the coding format can take place when the capacity parameter has been reached. The coding is then performed in this reduced coding format. This method can be combined with any coding process, since it does not need to intervene in the actual coding process that is used.

Method and device for coding and decoding image sequences

A method is proposed for checking convergence in fractal image coding. In this case, a digitized image is divided into a number of range blocks (R.sub.i, R.sub.i+1) and into a number of domain blocks (D.sub.j, D.sub.k). A similar domain block is determined in relation to each range block. If necessary, in this process a transformation of a domain block is undertaken in order to map the domain block onto a range block. The assignment of the domain block to the range block including the transformation parameters represents the fractal code for the image. A reduced transformation matrix is set up to check convergence of the fractal code. The largest absolute eigenvalue of the transformation matrix is determined approximately. The entire method can be carried out in this case hierarchically. In a first approximation step, at least the row sum norm of each row of the reduced transformation matrix is checked. In further steps, further rows are combined to form square matrices of higher dimension. The latter are used to determine the largest absolute eigenvalues for the purpose of checking convergence.
