Changes of properties (for example, dampness, sliding characteristic, gloss) of a printing substrate web caused by a printing of a printing substrate web are corrected by a multifunction device that is arranged at an output of the printing device. In the multifunction device, arranged in succession in the transport direction of the printing substrate web are devices for buffering, for smoothing, for moistening, for cooling, for lubrication and for discharge of the printing substrate web. The devices are executed and adapted to one another such that they can be optionally deactivated by the uses without affecting the functions of the remaining devices.

In an electrophotographic printer or copier, toner images of images to be printed onto a printing substrate are generated and fixed, causing sliding characteristics to be worsened. In order to remedy this problem, a moistening device is provided that applies on the printing substrate a moistening agent made from a moistening fluid and a lubricant dissolved therein. Two problems are thus solved: the printing substrate is moistened and simultaneously lubricated.

A fixing station and a method for fixing toner images on a carrier material. The fixing station has an arrangement for moving a carrier material in a first direction and in a second direction opposite the first direction, a heat radiation source, which heats the carrier material to fix a toner thereon, and a covering device which is arranged between the carrier material and the heat radiation source and is movable parallel to the direction of the carrier material between an opened and closed position, so that while in the closed position, it blocks radiation from reaching the carrier device and in an opened position allows the radiation to heat the carrier material. The method includes delaying the opening and closing of the covering device so that a previously fixed area of the carrier material is not subjected to additional radiation from the heat radiation source.

In a device and method for fixing toner images on a carrier web, rinsing chambers from which a mixture of solvent vapor and air is drawn off are located before and after a fixing chamber. The mixture is passed through a condenser, the discharge of which is re-supplied to the rinsing chambers.

In a vapor fixing device for an electrographic printer or copier, the heated vapor housing is provided such that vapor does not condense at the interior housing walls. A directed stream containing solvent vapor is produced which is directed at a section of the support material.
