The invention proposes a fuel supply system for internal combustion engines, having a fuel tank () and a fuel reservoir () disposed therein, having a fuel pump (), which drives one or more jet pumps (), each by means of a supply line (), the jet pumps () in turn filling the fuel reservoir () with fuel from the fuel tank (). There is also a fuel line (), which hydraulically connects the fuel reservoir () to the engine. During the starting of the engine, the fuel pump () feeds fuel into the fuel line (), thus improving the starting behavior of the engine.

Fuel supply system for internal combustion engines with improved filling of the fuel line

A fuel system is disclosed in which high-pressure fuel pump with a prefeed pump is proposed, in which the fuel quantity pumped by the prefeed pump is distributed for cooling and lubrication purposes, via a continuously adjustable multiposition valve, to the pump elements of the high-pressure fuel pump or to the low-pressure region of the high-pressure fuel pump. The multiposition valve is controlled by the control unit of the engine. An advantageous feature of the high-pressure fuel pump of the invention is that depending on the operating state of the engine and of the high-pressure fuel pump, an optimal distribution of the fuel quantity pumped by the prefeed pump can always be accomplished. Moreover, the energy demand by the prefeed pump is reduced and its service life is lengthened.

A safety switch which is dependent upon the fuel filter pressure difference, is provided in order to protect the pre-feed pump and the high-pressure pump by diverting overly pressurized flow back to the fuel.

The invention is directed to a method for assuring emergency driving functions with a diesel engine when the fuel temperature sensor fails, the diesel engine having a charging-air blower and a charging-air temperature sensor. The method includes performing a fuel temperature dependent correction of specific operating functions by taking the charging air temperature as a basis such that all functions corresponding to a fuel temperature of T.sub.K =+20.degree. C. are fulfilled at a charging air temperature of T.sub.L .gtoreq.0.degree. C. and all functions corresponding to a fuel temperature of T.sub.K =-10.degree. C. are fulfilled at a charging air temperature of T.sub.L &lt;0.degree. C. A control device for Diesel engines with which a rapid shutoff of the latter is possible by emptying the suction chamber of the injection pump by aspiration. The control device includes a control valve, which in the operating position (I) opens up the feed line of the feed pump toward the suction chamber and in the reversed shutoff position (II) blocks this feed line between the compression side (D) of the feed pump and the suction chamber. The control valve is an electromagnetic shutoff valve. A further part of the control device is an electric fuel pump, which as a special aspirating pump is disposed in an aspiration line leading from the suction chamber back to the fuel tank. For emergency engine shutoff, the control valve, displaced into its blocking position (II), blocks the flow of fuel between the feed pump and the suction chamber, while the aspirating fuel pump that has been turned on at the same time empties the suction chamber by aspiration. The emergency shutoff takes place rapidly, thereby reliably preventing engine damage and accidents.

A control device for Diesel engines is proposed in which a rapid shutoff of the engine can be effected by evacuating the suction chamber of the injection pump. The control device includes a supply pump and a reversal valve, which in a stop position connects the suction chamber with the intake side of the supply pump and connects the compression side of the supply pump with the fuel tank. A check valve is provided in the supply line between the supply pump and the fuel filter which, when closed, is vacuum-tight; this check valve is disposed to open toward the filter, counter to the force of a valve closing spring. Another check valve, comprising an overflow valve determining the suction chamber pressure, is provided in an overflow line leading from the suction chamber to the fuel tank; this overflow valve is also vacuum-tight when closed. When the reversal valve is actuated by an electromagnet, a similar key-actuated shutoff to that known in gasoline engines can also be effected in Diesel engines. The circuitry of this embodiment also enables an involuntary 'rolling start' to be blocked, and allows for a fail-safe shutoff of the engine in case of a malfunction in the governor shutoff device.

A fuel control system to provide an excess fuel quantity during engine acceleration and including manifold pressure actuated control units. The pressure increase in one control unit is delayed by throttling, resulting in net differential control forces tending to increase the fuel supplied to the injection nozzles of the engine injection system while the manifold pressure is rising.
