Forging machines are provided with four rams which are arranged offset at 90.degree. to one another in a cruciform manner in one plane acting radially upon the workpiece guided longitudinally in the system axis and are equipped with tools, wherein displacement devices acting upon tool supports are provided for setting the tools with respect to the rams in accordance with the end position of the stroke of the rams. The known displacement devices have the disadvantage that the connection of the displacement devices to their drives must be provided with couplings or transmission connections which compensate the stroke of the rams. By the present invention the drives of the displacement devices are secured to the rams and push-pull rods or rotating rods are provided as drive connections with the displacement devices mounted on the front plates of the rams, for the transverse displacement of the tools. In particular, linear-stroke drives are provided which cooperate with push-pull rods as drive connections and angle-lever drives as displacement devices.

Forging machine

The invention relates to forging machines which are provided with in particular four rams which are arranged offset at 90.degree. to one another in a cruciform manner in one plane, act radially upon the workpiece, guided longitudinally in the system axis, and are equipped with tools. Piston-cylinder units provided for driving the rams are dimensioned for the entire stroke of the rams. The object of the invention is a simple, secure setting of the stroke-end position of the rams corresponding to the current tool setting or width. This object is attained in that the stroke of each ram (2) or the cylinder (4) connected to it can be limited in the inner stroke-end position by displaceable stops (17, 18, 19) arranged between the machine frame (1) and a projection (14b) on the ram (2) or cylinder (4). It is particularly advantageous to use as the stops spacer members (18, 19) in the form of plates pivotable about an axis parallel to the ram axis and having eccentric extensions (24, 25) pivoting into and out of the path of the projection (14b).

A forging machine has four rams arranged at 90.degree. to one another in a cruciform manner in one plane; these act radially upon the workpiece, guided longitudinally in the system axis, and are equipped with tools. In order that the tools may form a closed pass contour in different adjustable stroke-end positions they are connected to the rams by way of supports and are displaceable transversely to the ram axis, releasable clamping members being provided which each lock a support against a front face of a ram. The suction arising during separation of the supports from the front faces of the rams can lead to the penetration of dirt (scale) into the gaps between the front faces of the rams and the supports. The supports (17) are provided with locking teeth (40) on their sides parallel to the displacement plane, the teeth (40) extending transversely to the displacement direction, and locking members (42), locked on the rams (2) in the displacement direction, can be engaged and disengaged with the locking teeth. In particular, the locking members (42) are secured to the ram (2) so as to be pivotable about shafts (41) parallel to the displacement direction and are provided at their free ends, facing the supports (17), with teeth corresponding to the teeth (40) on the supports (17). This minimises the risk of suction due to separation of the support from the ram.

A forging machine has a machine frame (1), radial forging rams (2) each adapted to carry a die (5), distributed angularly in a common working plane around the system axis (5); radial pressure-fluid piston (12) and cylinder (11) units on the machine frame, each with its cylinder forming or connected to a respective ram and having a stroke corresponding to the required ram stroke; and crossheads (15) mounted adjustably on the machine frame and each supporting the piston of a respective piston and cylinder unit. The stroke position of each ram is adjustable by adjustment of the crosshead towards and away from the system axis. A flange (19) is provided on each cylinder (11) and, a ring (17) extends around each ram, at the radially inner side of the flange (19), and is connected to the adjustable crosshead. Ram return piston and cylinder units (20,22) are disposed between the ring and flange.

Forging machine with stroke adjustment means

A forging machine has four forging rams (2) supported by the machine frame (1) for movement radially towards and away from the system axis (5) in an X arrangement at 90.degree. to one another. Piston and cylinder units (12-15) on the machine frame each have a ram (2) as a constituent part and have a stroke corresponding to the working stroke of the ram. A crosshead (16) supports each piston and cylinder unit, and is adjustable (23-25) relative to the machine frame for setting the stroke position of the ram. An adjustable die holder (6) at the radially inner end of each ram adjusts a die (5) thereon in a direction transverse to the radial direction of the ram, so that the dies can be positioned with parts of their working surfaces overlapping side surfaces of adjacent dies to form a closed forging pass contour smaller than the working surfaces of the dies. Radially extending drive shafts (58) external to the rams and gear units (54-59) at the radially inner ends of the shafts adjust the die holders. Each gear unit is attached (57) to the associated ram, and a rotary coupling (60) is provided between each gear unit and a shaft drive device (63) for facilitating the die holder adjustment dependent on ram radial movement.

Forging machine with die holder lateral adjustment

A forging manipulator has a billet gripper carrier rotatable about its longitudinal axis in bearings, which in turn are displaceable transversally along cross arms on a carriage. To reduce height and to reduce bending moments, the cross arms are above the bearings and above the gripper carrier, which are suspended from the cross arms. The cross arms are raised and lowered, by telescopic piston and cylinder units which support the cross arms on the upper ends of the cylinders, the piston rods being suspended on the carriage.

Forging manipulator

In a forging machine which has four radial rams with respective tools together forming a closed bite, each tool overlaps one adjacent tool and is overlapped by the other adjacent tool, and can be adjusted laterally relative to the radial ram axis, in the operating plane of the rams and tools, for setting the bite size.

A forging manipulator for a forging machine is moved longitudinally by a rack and pinion mechanism comprising a pair of longitudinal guide rails on opposite sides of the manipulator, and respective toothed racks associated with these guide rails, the toothed racks being inclined inwards (in cross section), and the manipulator carriage being provided with a respective travel drive for meshing with each rack, the travel drives similarly having their axes inclined to the horizontal.

A forging manipulator has two pairs of workpiece gripping arms which operate in respective mutually perpendicular planes. Each pair of arms is operable by a respective independent actuating mechanism, so that the respective pairs of arms can accommodate workpiece dimensions. The two actuating mechanisms comprise:
