During the bending of sheet metal sections () for forming can bodies by means of a bending machine, the sheet metal characteristics of the individual sheets are measured, e.g. the thickness and/or the strength of the sheets. The measured value is used to control the bending machine (). This permits a substantially constant bending result to be achieved, even with varying sheet metal characteristics.

Method and device for bending sheet metal sections

A conveying apparatus with a first conveyor and a second conveyor is used a the welding apparatus and a welding method for container bodies and in particular can bodies between which conveyors the object to be welded is handed over. A control unit determines the take over position and/or the conveying travel of the second conveyor and controls the conveyors accordingly, so that the take over occurs at the determined position and/or with the determined conveying travel of the second conveyor. This allows an easy and swift changing of the welding apparatus to different sizes of the objects to be welded.

In the area of manufacturing peel-off lids () out of lid rings with a peel-off foil () sealed on it, a part of the sealing surface () is bent up in the direction of the lid edge in order to tension the sealing surface with the peel-off foil. In order to separate tin can bodies carried by a first conveyor belt at a high speed, a second conveyor belt is taken close to the first conveyor belt and individual bodies are transferred from the first conveyor belt to the second conveyor belt. It is thus possible to separate a sequence of tin bodies into two sequences, thus facilitating further processing. The process can also be reversed to form a single sequence from two sequences.

Method and apparatus for separating and bringing together series of container bodies

In order to separate can bodies carried by a first conveyor belt at a high speed, a second conveyor belt is taken close to the first conveyor belt and individual bodies are transferred from the first conveyor belt to the second conveyor belt. It is thus possible to separate a sequence of tin bodies into two sequences, thus facilitating further processing. The conveyor apparatus is connecting a cutter, by means of which sheet metal blanks are produced in adjacent rows, to the magazine of a can welding apparatus which produces from the sheet metal blanks can bodies. A row of adjacently arranged depositing receptacles for receipt of at least one sheet metal blank each is located along the cutter on a frame. Two conveyor chains having dogs move along the depositing receptacles of which each presents a bottom surface which rises in the direction of transport such that the dogs push the sheet metal blanks from one to the next depositing receptacle and accordingly collect the sheet metal blanks out of all depositing receptacles such to form a pile at the end. Such pile is taken over at the end of the path of transport of the conveyer chains by a further conveyer means in form of elastically supported pawls. These pawls push the pile on a slanted rising slideway in a timed fashion by a certain span of the path of transport and are moved oscillatingly and are pressed under the pile during their reverse movement. By means of the pawls the staple is moved into a turn-over apparatus which includes two disk wheels which move rotatingly in slots in the slideway after a respective pile of sheet metal blanks has been pushed into radially extending slots in the two disk wheels. After a rotation of 180.degree. each pile has been turned over and is transported on the adjoining slideway by further pawls, of which a plurality is provided along the slideway, into the magazine. The turn-over apparatus is only facultatively present for the case that printed sheet metal blanks must be turned over.

Conveyor apparatus for the transport of sheet metal blanks

Two similar machines are arranged on a preferably common floor frame can be individually laterally dislocated by suitable means from a normal operating position into a non-operative position. This arrangement allows an extremely compact arrangement of the machines for the normal operation and due to the simple lateral displacing a position of the machines is made possible which allows access to all parts of the machines. The other machine may, if desired, continue its operation without any interruption.

A can body made of a sheet metal blank has a tear strip extending between opposite ends of the blank and into a tongue extending from one blank edge. An overlapping portion at overlapping ends of the blank is completely welded, and the tongue width is greater than the strip width to assure tendency of rupture of the can body from opposite side edges of the tongue toward the strip to avoid premature breaking of the strip.

An electric resistance seam welding method and apparatus includes a continuous wire electrode which is passed successively over a first electrode reel and thereafter over a second electrode reel via a plurality of guide and deflection rollers, the outer surfaces of the wire confronting each other when passing over the reels and being pressed together by the reels by a predetermined welding force against interposed workpieces to be seam welded together. An electric current is applied so as to pass from the second electrode reel to the first reel through the wire electrode and the interposed workpieces, and the wire electrode is motor driven for feeding the workpieces through the reels. A copper wire is utilized as the wire electrode and has a tensile strength at the elastic limit of between 11 and 13 kg-f/mm.sup.2 and has a percentage elongation at break of 26 to 17%. The reels are pressed together by a force of 60 to 70 kg, and the copper wire is subject to a tensile stress of less than 10 kg-f/mm.sup.2 while passing over and between the reels. The reels are maintained at an operating temperature of 10.degree. to 30.degree. C. as the wire electrode passes thereover, so that a maximum elongation of the wire of 6% when passing over the first reel, and a maximum further elongation of the wire of 6% when passing over the second reel, is attained.

Electrical resistance seam welding method and apparatus

A welder for welding side seams of tubular bodies. The welder has a body feed in the form of a single conveyor which serves to receive bodies at regular intervals from a rounded unseamed tubular body supply and to move the bodies into a welding head nip with the bodies being initially widely spaced and then the gap between a body in the welding head and a trailing body being rapidly reduced so that the leading edge of a following body enters into the nip at the same moment as the trailing edge of a leading body begins to depart from the nip, with the adjacent edges of adjacent bodies being in substantially touching but positively spaced relation.

Method and apparatus for resistance welding of cans

An electrode roll-welding arrangement for a resistance roll-welding machine comprising a welding arm adapted to be supported at a machine frame and an electrode roll mounted at an end of the welding arm, the electrode roll being supplied with the welding current by means of the welding arm acting as an electrical conductor and a shaft of the electrode roll mounted in such welding arm. The end of the welding arm receiving the electrode roll is bifurcated or fork-shaped and embodies two fork-like or bifurcated leg members situated essentially in parallelism and opposite one another, each bifurcated leg member having a slot which opens towards the front side or face of the end of the welding arm. Each such slot has at its inward or proximal slot end a bearing cradle for the reception of the shaft of the electrode roll. A clamping element is arranged in each slot and each such clamping element is urged with its contact surfaces against the shaft of the electrode roll as well as against the slot walls in the welding arm by means of an adjustable pressure element which is arranged at the end of each leg member of the welding arm.
