A dispenser for a fluid material includes a handle portion and a cartridge having the material to be dispensed. The cartridge is easily mounted to the handle portion or removed, whereby the handle portion may be used with a variety of cartridges, each of which may contain a selected material. The handle portion includes a plunger that is moved linearly by actuation of a trigger mechanism, which is engaged by a user's finger. The trigger mechanism is configured to release pressure applied to the plunger quickly upon release of pressure on the trigger and to allow the plunger to move away from the cartridge to ensure release of pressure in the material to be dispensed to prevent dripping.

A glue gun includes a nozzle body and a replaceable nozzle cap. The body is mounted in a melt casting of the glue gun such that it is rotationally adjustable. Thus, a rotationally asymmetric nozzle cap is more easily used because the nozzle body can be rotated to correct misalignment of the cap due to differences in the orientation of threads holding the cap to the body. A preferred nozzle includes a plurality of openings that allows the application of several small beads. These beads can be pressed into a thin layer if delay tack adhesive is used. Hot-melt adhesives, useful for both glue-pot and glue-gun applications, are formulated so that they can be applied at temperatures no higher than 280.degree. F. and preferably at temperatures of at most 250.degree. F. The adhesive compositions have a heat resistance of at least 125.degree. F. and are readily shaped into glue sticks for use in glue guns, The adhesive for the hot-melt adhesive compositions is suitably compounded with tackifying resin and/or wax. The resulting composition has a sharp viscosity profile, which is readily achieved, e.g., by using a high melt index adhesive polymer as an essential component.

A hot melt adhesive composition includes decorative polyester glitter flakes. The compositions are designed for use at temperatures low enough that degradation of the glitter is avoided.

A dispenser for hot-melt materials, such as adhesives, includes a heat-conductive, removable cartridge containing the adhesive to be melted, a chamber for receiving the cartridge and a heater adjacent the cartridge for melting the adhesive prior to dispensing through a nozzle. Pressure is applied through a plunger to expel the adhesive through the nozzle.

In a hot-melt adhesive system, a glue stick is provided with a transverse cross section which is acircular. A glue gun is provided with an acircular opening in the gripper housing and an acircular opening in the heating element to accommodate a glue stick. In a preferred embodiment, the major dimension of the glue stick is approximately one-half inch while the smaller dimension is slightly more than one-quarter inch. The acircular glue stick provides excellent heat transfer in the heating chamber and permits a simpler manufacturing process. The gripper housing includes a gripper element which engages a major part of the width of the glue stick and can transmit a large advancing force without becoming embedded in the stick.

A mechanism is described which employs a safety element for preventing the application of excessive force to a linkage. In several embodiments the safety device comprises a spring which allows relative movement between a trigger and the linkage. The safety device may, however, be a mechanical fuse. The inventive safety device is embodied in a hot glue gun so that the safety device prevents the application of excessive force to the linkage which advances glue. Damage to the glue gun is thus avoided. Also disclosed is a unique return spring for a mechanism such as the glue gripper of a glue gun. The return spring allows rotation of the gripping element to occur before linear movement of the glue stick.
