An alarm based upon the voltage across a linear regulator's pass transistor and the regulator's load current alerts operational circuitry which obtains power through the regulator when the voltage across the pass transistor may be insufficient for proper voltage regulation. The alarm's trigger voltage is adjusted in response to variations in the regulator's output current.

A circuit for providing programmable hysteresis levels is disclosed. The circuit includes comparators for producing output signals when an input signal crosses respective set points and a hysteresis circuit for establishing a hysteresis in the output signals. When a comparator's output signal is 'on', the input signal is shifted by a hysteresis differential. The output signal is terminated when the shifted input signal returns to the set point. The hysteresis circuit includes a programmable hysteresis input for adjusting the hysteresis differential to different preset and intermediate hysteresis levels.

The output stage for a feedback amplifier has a diode circuit to provide quiescent current to the output transistors, and a diode turnoff circuit that renders the diodes non-conductive for an input signal that sends the stage output voltage low. A swing transistor between the stage's output terminal and a low voltage bus is actuated by the same input signal to drive the output voltage to the level of the low voltage bus. Both the diode turnoff circuit and the swing transistor are preferably MOSFETs.
