CVD Alumina coating has been one of the most important materials for wear resistant application for many years. Recently, texture control in &#x3b1;-AlOhas attracted increasing attention due to the possibility to further improve the anisotropic properties such as thermal conductivity and mechanical properties. The influence of process parameters on textures is complex. In the present application, the influence of nucleation surface condition and HS on the texture in CVD &#x3b1;-AlOcoatings has been investigated. It has been shown that without the addition of HS, the crystal orientation in the AlOcoatings is primarily dominated by the nucleation surface condition, whereas the effect of reactant composition on texture is minimal. On the other hand, in the presence of HS during growth, reactant composition also plays an important role in affecting the crystal orientation. This effect is likely due to the strong interaction between the AlOsurface and the HS.

Control and characterization of texture in CVD &#x3b1;-AlOcoatings

In one aspect, articles are described comprising wear resistant coatings employing one or more composite refractory layers. For example, a coated article described herein comprises a substrate and a coating deposited by CVD adhered to the substrate, the coating including a multiphase refractory layer comprising an alumina phase and a zirconia phase, wherein the zirconia phase has a texture coefficient for the (200) growth direction, TC(200), greater than 4.

Composite refractory coatings and applications thereof

Cutting tools are described having coatings which can demonstrate desirable wear resistance and increased cutting lifetimes. A coated cutting tool described herein has a substrate and a coating with a plurality of alternating layers of a first layer of AlOand a second layer of at least one of MeAlOand MeAlO/MeOcomposite, wherein Me is Zr, Hf, Ti or a combination thereof. The coating has a superlattice-like structure.

Multilayer structured coatings for cutting tools

A coated cutting insert includes a substrate that is either a ceramic substrate or polycrystalline cubic boron nitride-containing substrate and has a substrate surface. A base coating scheme is applied by chemical vapor deposition to the substrate surface wherein the base coating scheme includes the following coating layers: an inner coating layer adjacent to the substrate surface wherein the inner coating layer is a nitride selected from the group consisting of titanium nitride, zirconium nitride and hafnium nitride; an inner mediate coating layer deposited to the inner coating layer wherein the inner mediate coating layer is a carbonitride selected from the group consisting of titanium carbonitride, zirconium carbonitride and hafnium carbonitride; an outer mediate coating layer deposited to the inner mediate coating layer and wherein the outer mediate coating layer is a carbonitride selected from the group consisting of titanium carbonitride, zirconium carbonitride and hafnium carbonitride; and an outer coating layer deposited on the outer mediate coating layer wherein the outer coating layer is a carbide selected from the group consisting of titanium carbide, zirconium carbide and hafnium carbide. An exterior coating scheme is deposited on the base coating scheme by physical vapor deposition.

PVD-coated cutting tools and method for making the same

A coated cutting insert for a chipforming material removal operation wherein the coated insert has a substrate and a coating scheme on the substrate. The coating scheme includes a CVD transition coating layer. The coating scheme further includes a CVD multi-layered coating scheme having a plurality of coating sets. Each one of the coating sets has an aluminum oxide coating layer and a nitrogen-containing coating layer.

CVD coated cutting insert and method of making the same

A CVD-coated article has a substrate with a substrate surface and a CVD coating scheme on the substrate surface. The coating scheme includes a coating layer of TiMenitride wherein Me is selected from the group of zirconium or hafnium or a mixture of zirconium and hafnium, and x equals between about 0.1 and about 0.9. The coating layer of TiMenitride has a microhardness equal to between about 2300 HV0.05 and about 2600 HV0.05, a face centered cubic crystal structure, and a lattice constant equal to between about 0.427 nanometers and about 0.453 nanometers.

CVD-coated article and CVD process of making the same

In one aspect, articles are described herein comprising refractory coatings employing alumina-based hybrid nanocomposite architectures. A coated article described herein comprises a substrate and a coating deposited by CVD adhered to the substrate, the coating including a composite refractory layer having a matrix phase comprising alumina and at least one particulate phase within the matrix phase, the particulate phase comprising nanoscale to submicron particles formed of at least one of an oxycarbide and oxycarbonitride of one or more metals selected from the group consisting of aluminum and Group IVB metals.

Hybrid nanocomposite coatings and applications thereof

In one aspect, articles employing CVD coatings deposited at low temperatures are described herein. Briefly, a coated article described herein comprises a substrate and a refractory coating adhered to the substrate, the refractory coating including a layer of TiN deposited by thermal CVD, the layer of TiN having an average crystallite size of 0.05 &#x3bc;m to 0.5 &#x3bc;m and residual tensile stress of 100 MPa to 700 MPa.

Low temperature CVD coatings and applications thereof

In one aspect, articles are described comprising refractory coatings employing nanocomposite architectures. Articles having such refractory coatings, in some embodiments, are suitable for high wear and/or abrasion applications such as metal cutting operations. A coated article described herein comprises a substrate and a coating deposited by CVD adhered to the substrate, the coating including a refractory layer having a matrix phase comprising alumina and a nanoparticle phase contained within the matrix phase, the nanoparticles phase comprising crystalline nanoparticles formed of at least one of a carbide, nitride or carbonitride of a Group IVB metal.

Nanocomposite refractory coatings and applications thereof

In one aspect, cutting tools are described having coatings adhered thereto which, in some embodiments, demonstrate desirable wear resistance and increased cutting lifetimes. A coated cutting tool described herein comprises a substrate and a coating adhered to the substrate, the coating including a refractory layer comprising plurality of sublayer groups, a sublayer group comprising an aluminum oxynitride (AlON) sublayer or a composite AlON sublayer and an alumina (AlO) sublayer or composite alumina sublayer.
